I didn't want to 'jack the PM2 bottle opener thread so started a new one. ;) (it was my inspiration though)

Yeah, I know, why mess up a perfectly good blade for this? It was already messed up is why. Took a bit of a chunk out of the blade and the tip was damaged so figured I'd repurpose the blade. And honestly I'll get more use out of it in this form anyway. (note my forum handle)

Simply done with a cut off wheel then ground and wet sanded the cuts. Dulled all of the edges on a belt grinder. Forced a patina with a splash of 4 different vinegars and left for 24 hours. It's going to get a lot of pocket time/use so the patina will wear nicely.
And now I have my Spyderco bottle opener.

It looks like you did a good job, but I'm still cringing. I would never do that to any good Spyderco, let alone a sprint run.

Funny, I did cringe a bit as well  but as stated It was already a mess and I can always buy another if I don't want my other Enduras to get lonely.

Yeah, I cringed too! Oh well, it's yours after all.

So what caused the tip/edge damage?

You should have seen me cringe while I was messing it up...
Abuse on my part is the answer I'm going with. And the patina is hiding all of the laminate scratches. Not a fan of the laminate. I love my unlaminated Super Blue Caly 3!

too good of steel for a bottle opener.....painful to see it this way, but better than scrap i guess.:)

I didn't pee in anyone's corn flakes here did I? :D
Now I'm tempted to turn my Klotzli into a corkscrew just for effect. They'll make a great pair.

Sweet bottle opener! I'd rock it.

I'll get some serious action photos at work this week. Guaranteed it'll be one of the more used Super Blue Enduras around. So what if it's not cutting anything...

Wondering why you would try to to force a patina on 420j laminate stainless steel? It should just wipe off with a rag or and slicing at all, leaving the slightly corroded exposed bits of Super Blue.

No problem with modding any knife to make it more personal but the patina & very corrosion resistant stainless steels thing doesn't usually work.

The laminate developed deep scratches and the patina covers. Same as my ZDP Caly 3.5. With the Caly I sanded and buffed the scratches out but a side effect was the laminate also sanded partially off where it tapers down. I didn't realize it was quite that soft but it did buff out well. No big deal I just use it for light work now so I don't need to go through that again.

Maybe this will make the difference for y'all.
Hung a lanyard on it! :D

you could have still used it as a knife, and open bottles with the blade closed in the handle.

And still can. ;)
Originally the reason I removed the damaged blade was to swap with another blade and scales. Yup, a picture of another sprint that's met its demise by my hand. Bwahahahaaa :D (another story with the Damascus though)
I was thinking of doing a regrind on the SuperBlue and installing it in one of my many Endura handles. I have marked the lock bars and blades so as to not lose track of the matching sets. If I didn't have so many Spydercos I'd get right on it but there's no rush.

My Cuscadi Damascus utilizing the SuperBlue liners.

No hate from me! If I needed a bottle opener, that's the one I'd want I my pocket. I ADORE repurposed specialty equipment as long as the original piece is identifiable.

Well done!

I'm wondering why did you grind at the back and not front. Any difference in structural strength?
Functionally, it would work better since it makes it a longer lever.

That said, I think a slightly modded Endura Wave would have fulfilled this purpose admirably.
