Wow im really starting to love this steel. I love the way it cuts. If you were to ask me what steel it reminds me of in the way it cuts, holds an edge and sharpens I would say it reminds me of xhp without being stainless

I'm liking my Super Blue Caly more and more these days. It consistently out performs every other knife I have, plus the Caly 3.5 is very comfortable and discrete to carry.

The Super blue Caly 3.5 scratches an itch I've had for as long as I can remember. A modern, easy opening , very well made tungsten alloy steel lockback. Full size no less. It's as if I designed it myself. I'm not crazy and I know I didn't but the knife sure fits me. It's the only knife that can park my Enduras which I have compulsively carried since 92.

The steel sharpens as well or better than any knife I own. The edges it takes are amazing. I do like those tungsten carbides. They fit me better than those big, scary ( ex-devil worshipping) vanadium carbides.;)

It's super stable, tough enough for the knifes design purposes and more wear resistant than most think after looking at the composition. I'll say it again. It sharpens so nicely.

IMO, these are THE golden age of Spydercos. This knife along with a CPM M4 hard use folder that is close to perfection, an O-1 Bushcraft blade, ZDP still in production. And, the mule team! Not to mention all those nice sprints with extremely high performing alloys and knife designs.

I haven't had to go non spyderco for a long time now.

Sal, and Eric, and the Spyderco team, Thank you all!

Next time Mr. Sal, consider torx instead of rivets. We like to clean, maintain and lube the inside of our Spydies.

I was very pleased to find out that despite the pinned construction, the blade on the Caly 3.5 is still super easy to remove and replace for cleaning.

this was my only fear as well and it's truly a breeze. there's still the lockbar pivot that can't be cleaned but it's less important than the blade tang area imo.

Can you guys tell me more about this steel? I have not heard of it before today. I am wanting to get a folding knife that will take a good patina (carbon steel).

Is this Spydie a good option for me? What pros/cons does this steel exhibit... hardness, edge retention, rust resistence (without a patina), toughness? Can you compare it to any other steels in any of those terms?

Thanks, and looks nice!

I believe super blue would be a good choice for you. It's been my first carbon EDC steel and I love it.

Super blue ranks well in hardness and edge retention (comparable to ZDP 189 by Ankerson's tests). It's corrosion resistance is kind of low however, taking a patina quickly and pitting if exposed to caustic or acidic agents. It makes up for that though with its ease of sharpening. It's easy - really easy - to sharpen. As long as you can keep the knife dry or coated with lubricant, the Caly 3.5 in super blue makes a superb EDC.

to complete all the answers, its the only steel I've haad rust the day after I flitzed from pocket sweat

have you ever used plain carbon steels ? like 1095 ?

in my experience aogami super is clearly more rust and pitting resistant than 1095. far from stainless, less stain resistant than M4 but still sensibly more than 1095.

in my mind what you describe is normal, in some places i've worked i used to sweat enough that even s30V would rust when clipped to my pocket under the appron.

Waaaaa s30 rusted in your pocket ,you need to drink some more water and fllush some of that salt out ;) . Its not as bad as 1095 but I only own fixed blades in this steel so its never delt with pocket dew

If you want a blade that will get a patina easily, super blue would be a good choice. After only a few apples, mine is well on its way to having a full patina.

flitz doesn't make that edge and edge pro does.apparently you can take that edge to a strop and make it more mirror even though its already as much a mirror as the one in my bathroom. Can you see into another dimension? ;)

Day four of work at the nursery since I edge proed. This is where the elite steels start to separate themselves from s30 and the rest of the heard. We shall see

yes...yes i can....i was talking about the rest of the blade not the edge...simple old leather belt does the trick just fine after you edge pro them. especially s30v

Im confused, how do make something more mirror es if its already as much a mirror as the one in my bathroom?are you saying to get back that mirror affect back after some use?
