I have been making the Combat Special for a few years now but had it in mind to make a "next step" progression to that basic knife. The idea has been cooking for awhile....and I combined elements of experimentation with 52100, G10, and most importantly, the cutting comp that I was involved with.

This knife is not a replacement for the basic Combat Special....just a different grade. Kinda like a basic parkerized 1911 vs a Gold Cup...so to speak.

The blade is 8", forged from 52100 that I got from Ray Kirk, rolled down from a round bar. During the forging process I shock quenched the steel several times...then being careful to reduce forging heat as the profile came finish. Normalized a couple times...then a somewhat long process of a triple quench...the last being an edge quench....that I derived from processes from several excellent 52100 bladesmith. The blade was finish ground and triple tempered.

The handle is green/black/pistachio G10. It is in three 1/4" layers...bonded with Acraglas, two stainless Corby bolts, and two 1/4 stainless thong pins. The handle is butted up against a black linen micarta guard. I added friction grooves which are VERY grippy and some filework on the guard face. The handle design is derived from my cutting comp knife.

The blade runs 5/16" thick and has been bead blasted and coated in matte silver GunKote.

A tremendous edge holder....the razor edge flexed for its entire length along a brass rod.

I think I want to play with it for a couple days and it will go onto the sale area. Also want to make some better pics...the weather is crappy right now. Pretty sure it will be equipped with a Spec Ops or Eagle sheath.

Looks good, and I even like the G10 handle. G10 is not something I usually care for.

I am starting to like G10 more and more as I go. I can move it faster than micarta and it responds to a heavy blasting better too...as far as texture goes.

I also like using it to "frame" the tang.....using three pieces of 1/4" G10...with the center piece cut out to fit. You can see some of the scrap I cut off while shaping the handle in the first pic.

Vary nice looking package... I do particularly like the handle in shape and proportion wise, but I'm curious about the guard portion..

I assume it's G10 also... How would it hold up, for instance, in parrying a blade whose edge slides into the guard portion? (after all, it's a Combat knife and that "might" be encountered.)

Otherwise, with a different tip configuration, I'd have to put you on my short list! :D

Joeshredd....

Believe it or not I have had the question asked in the past. My Combat Special uses similar materials. So I did some tests and and came up with a couple conclusions.

1. The guard (micarta on this one) has to take and absolute "helluva" direct hit to be severed by a blade. I've chopped pieces of micarta with a large chopper in my shop and it isnt easy to cut thru....with one hit.

2. If the guard was hit that hard in a knife fight (if a knife fight did ever occur) I doubt you would still have the knife in your hand or your wrist would be broken. In other words....the knife fight would be bigger of the two concerns at that point.

It is a great question though. ..early on I was more worried that you could impact the guard when chopping and break it....that hasnt happened either

I also had to ask the same question on Blinker's post of his new fighter. You both are using G10 as both handle AND guard, and I got pretty much the same answer from Robert - you'd really have to hammer on it!

And your point about holding on after that hard a blow I suppose is actually more telling! :D

So, G10 should be able to absorb just about anything that can happen to it... it all just depends on if it's still in your hands!

Thanks to you both!!

I am very impressed.

This knife is a work of art, I love the lines of it.

It also looks exceedingly useful.

Great work.

What are you looking for, pricewise?
