Super commander vs. Cqc8

Wanted some input please.

I've got two Emersons, a CQC8 and a Horseman. I had a Super CQC8, but it was a little large so I sold it.

It sounds like a Super Commander might be about perfect too, and 4" is my favorite blade length.

What are your thoughts, those of whom have had the pleasure of owning both knives? How do they compare?

Lastly, I'm wondering about getting an UBR Commander, but it might be a little large for EDC just like the Super CQC8 was.

What seems to be the consensus on that? Does the Super seem to be a little more manageable and better suited for EDC?

Thank you in advance for the input.

Man! I am right there with you--I have been agonizing over the super vs ubr commander for about 2 weeks... I have the cqc 13 and the super 7, and love them both. I'm very curious to see what people will say. And sorry I could not be more help to you...

I've owned a CQC-8, 15, super commander, and Ubr commander. I've EDC'd the Ubr since I got it a few weeks ago and I love it. For me it isn't too big but I like larger knives overall. The super commander fits my hand like a glove, it's by far the best fit in my hand of all my Emersons. I sold my CQC-8 because I didn't like the handle. It was long enough but it was too thin for my hand to get a comfortable grip. As far as the CQC-15, the handle is a little too short but l like it. If the super 8 was too big for you, the Ubr will be too as it is wider in the pocket. Overall, I think the Super Commander would be the best bet for both of you. Here's a comparison shot.

That photo speaks volumes, thank you Silvanis!

Yes, the UBR looks great, but I think the Super will be a "Happy Medium" and offer the best bang for my buck.

Of course I want them both, but restraint will actually win out this time, at least for me. Surprising...

Now as for Aias....!

Ha! Both! Me too! But no, I'll have to choose, at least for now. Which may mean grab the ubr first, before it's gone, then the super. But much like you, I know the super is probably the most practical choice. I just love big folders... I was thinking of making the ubr my outdoors/ hiking folder to go with my Busse tglb. Decisions, decisions... Thanks for the pic and info, and thanks OP for letting me tag along in you quest for the perfect commander!

Supers a great knife, I find that if I grip it hastily it's possible for my index and middle finger to kind of almost get jammed together in the finger cut out intended for your index finger, because the knifes just bigger than the original. I can't do detail work as well as I can with the original commander, I like to hold it with the hand guard against the web of my hand for detail work. It's an excellent trail knife and that's what I use mine for, it's got that bigger size you want out in the woods, and it doesn't carry uncomfortably in the pocket. When you grip it you really know your gripping a knife I'll say that.

Ohhh lawwwwd the super commander is one of those knives that is just magical. It takes all the positive points of the commander and just puts them in a nicely packaged folding pocket machete :D

I have had a Super, Standard and Mini in the Commander line. I am REALLY digging the Mini right at this moment, but also miss the Super I sold a LOT. 8 not withstanding, I consider the Commander to be the quintessential EKI (no, I really don't dig the 7 Rolf).

I also agree that THE Emerson to me is the Commander line, hands-down. I don't really like the CQC-7 much either because I think the Commander blade is just soooooooooooooooo useful and practical. To me, the Commander has a blade that is notable like the Ritter Griptilian. It's not that other models are lacking, but the Commander and Ritter make some notable improvements in the game of designing the best multi-tasking blade possible. Like the Ritter, once someone uses the Commander blade, I think it is difficult to carry other models because the designs make such notable improvements seen with daily usage of an EDC.

I've only held the Horseman, but the Commander has a blade profile I really like (and I generally hate recurves). I like the Horseman's profile too. One thing I think the Horseman has in common with the Commander is that both blade shapes/grinds are good designs for someone who BEATS on their knives in that they are tough and easy to upkeep. If I have to choose a knife I am going to use for heavy cutting tasks that I know will damage any edge, the Commander is high on my list because it holds up well and is easy to revive things like chips and major rolling.

To me, the Super and UBR Commanders are a little to large, but I've put a Super in my pocket and it carries fine for a knife of that size. I can understand the need for it even though my own usage matches better with the Mini Commander. The UBR is HUGE and I think it is too large of a knife for EDC between legality in some areas, the fact that you really cant use a knife like that in public, the form factor is large, weight is substantial, and IIRC the price is significantly higher.

Thank you all for your input! Very much appreciated.

My Super Commander arrived today, and man, am I IMPRESSED! What a nice knife.

Mine came perfectly centered, was VERY stiff at first but this is my fourth Emerson so I knew just what to do.

Took it apart, cleaned it up and shot it with some WD40, all we had at work. Transformed it into the knife action I knew Emersons are capable of.

Looking back, I agree, pnsxyr. The UBR would be a tad too large. The Super is bigger than my CQC8, but not ungainly large like my Super CQC8 was. This is perfect.
