After more than a week, the Super CQC-8 BT finally arrived. I like it a lot. The knife fits my hand well, very comfortable. No problems with the fit and finish that I can see. The liners could have been polished a bit more but they are not rough by any means. The knife surprised me in that it feels lighter than it should for its size. The scales are fantastic. The most secure grip of any folder that I own. The edge is a nice, even grind and very sharp out of the box. The lockup is early. The problem is that the lock is sticky and opening the blade is a little difficult because it is very tight. I loosened the pivot screw a bit but that makes the blade rub against the scale. I have spent this morning opening and closing the knife while reading the forums but I can't tell if that is helping yet.
I really do like this one and hope that it becomes smoother.

Give it time, the sticky lock will eventually right itself. In the past month or so I received a A100 and a 7AW both sticky, as all get out. They are now sticky free! :D I also found that if I opened them hard a few times it helps things along.
I just received a Horseman on Thursday, its my first Emerson that wasn't sticky, now I'm worried something must be wrong lol. :p

When I received my first Emerson, the horseman, about a little over three weeks ago; it arrived in the same condition as yours (sticky lock and rough action). I did nothing to the knife the first week except cycle it open and closed every chance I could. After a week I took it completely apart, cleaned it, and put a touch of fluorinated grease (CRK grease) on both washers. I could be wrong, but I believe that Emerson knives come with that almost sandy grease in order to polish the blade around the pivot for incredibly smooth action once it is broken in; at least that is what I discovered had happened to my horseman. The action is now buttery smooth a huge improvement from the factory.

As for the sticky lock mine is starting to become less sticky as well, though it still sticks when waved from the pocket. The stickiness never has bothered me though, but I have heard people say that a sharpie applied to the tang of the blade supposedly helps. Mine isn’t bad enough for me to be concerned about though so I haven’t tried it.

Congratulations on the super 8; I have been eyeing one of those myself!

Sweet blade! I think most emersons come a bit stick and very tough to open. Give the lock some time but take it apart and clean it and lube with whatever you want and it should open much smoother. I like these things cause it keeps people from buying all the emersons at my local gun shop lol

I called Emerson and asked them what I could do to fix the problem. They said just send it back and we will take care of it. Can't beat that!

Its normal. Every emerson comes this way. It might come back the same way or maybe they will open it clean and relube it. But I cant imagine they would use a different lube than they nornally do.

Thanks for the suggestions but I think this is more than the normal Emerson tightness. My newest Emerson is much different and is benefiting from your suggestions. I have been working the blade and it is already becoming smoother. I am sending the CQC-8 back as Emerson told me to do. Hopefully, it won't take too long because I really like it. Meanwhile I have the CQC-7 to use. :D

I decided to send it back to Emerson. They had it a week and shipped it back to me and it works perfectly now. Excellent Customer Service.

New Emersons are much grittier feeling than older knives. That being said all of mine have smoothed out.

No need to send it in, either take the knife apart and clean out all the gunk around the pivot, and apply your own lube, or let the knife break in on its on. emersons are stupid easy to take down and put back together, no need to send it in...

There seems to be a pattern here. Not that anyone will read it, but perhaps a Sticky with break-in info is in order?? Just sayin.

I have a 8 year old cqc 15 that i took apart, re assembled it with just a touch of engine assembly lube, then used blue lock tite on the pivot screw and set it at the tension that worked best for me. still works perfect to this day. The emersons will break in after some use and will be nice an smooth.
Just got myself a new roadhouse, ut have yet to edc it.

I have a new Horseman that is also very stiff. Mine is so stiff I'm afraid of tearing my pocket trying to get it open using the wave feature. For the prices they charge you shouldn't have to disassemble and re-oil them or open/close a few hundred times in order to get them to work smoothly. I will probably send mine back for them to take care of it.

You're going to send your knife back so they can turn a screw by 1/8th of an inch?

I have never had to disassemble any of my Emersons. As RD suggested, back off the pivot tension a smidge. If you still find it problematic, loosen the pivot, shoot in some WD40 to flush the pivot joint and re-lube with SAE 5W30 or whatever else you may have around. Note: WD40 is not a lubricant, FYI. Even if you don't use a lubricant, the Nylatron washers that Emerson use are self-lubricating.

Well I loosened the pivot a little. It was still stiff so I loosened it more until it was smooth but then I detected a little side to side blade play. Couldn't find an exact fine point where it was smooth with no blade play. It was either still a little too stiff with no blade play or smooth with a little blade play. The pivot was never turned more than half a turn. I guess I will leave it a little stiff and see if it smooths out with a little use before I send it in to Emerson.

It will smooth out with some use. be patient. Set the pivot screw where you feel comfortable and use your knife. No need to send it back, just needs a bit of break in.
