Anyone know if any mkaers are using CPM D2? It would seem like this fine grained powder steel should have the abrasion resistance of D2, but without the large carbides. :):):):)

It should be capable of a finely polished edge, possibly down to .5 Microns.:D

Am I missing something here??? Is anyone using this steel yet??

Spyderco has a Military sprint run made of this steel out now at the knifestores such as the knifecenter. It has a foliage green G10 handle and comes very sharp according to what I've read. The price is the same as the regular (S30V) version , PE only. I personally can't help you with the steels performance as I haven't gotten one yet. Joe

CPM D2 came very, scary Sharp! Hair Popping sharp! Have not had time for major use or testing but out of the Box, I think it is the sharpest knife I have ever had.

My CPM D2 Military was indeed sharper than my BG-42 Military from the factory. No major demolition jobs on it yet, just a few yards of old carpet cutting. So far it is holding up reasonably well. I can't say that I see a major difference from regular D2, though.

I have heard through the forum grapevine that Crucible decided the gains were too small to make the investment worthwhile and are dropping the project.

The Military in CPM D2 I tested tree topped and cut free hanging hair, definately the sharpest out of the box knife I have ever tried. The performance in rope slicing for me was basically identical with a D2 knife at 62 RC, both with a DMT fine finish. More testing is being done by others (Sodak right now) on the knives to see how each steel performs at different grits and angles to try to sort out if any major differences can be found between the two steels.

If it retains all of the good qualities of regular D2, but can be polished to a .5 micron, thin edge, it should make just about the best knife imaginable!:)
