After 19 years the shield on my 703 fell off yesterday.I pulled the knife from my pocket as I was changing into dress pants and noticed the shield was gone. I searched my pockets and could not find it. Then I noticed that it was stuck in between the blades of the knife. I dropped a couple of drops of super glue on it and put it back on. You folks think the super glue will hold it? If not any suggestions on what to use?

Personally I've not had good results with Super Glue. Probably user error. :)

I use Barge Cement for most items I need glued and it works very well for me.

Barge cement? Never heard of it. If this doesn't hold I'll have to look into finding some. I'd hate to lose the shield off this old friend.

I queried Joe Houser once about what to use for reattaching an inlay to a knife and he replied that they used Loctite alot. He didn't specify which product though.

Someone at Buck once said they use a Locktite glue with a number name. I can't remember without digging for it. You know, like 333, 404 or 505 something like that. Is was not 666. Its more of a commercial glue than Mart store glue. Barge is good but you have to look to find it. I have seen it in Home stores. I likely would have used Devcon 5 minute epoxy. I buy the 4 oz bottles and use it a lot. I just glued a new knob on a Blackpowder ramrod in the belief that it will be better than the soft plastic flippy thing that was on it......that broke. I believe in this glue rule - the quicker it sets, the weaker it holds. Overnight epoxy is the strongest going.

LocTite 326 is some pretty amazing glue. Two parts, a primer to clean the parts, and the glue. It grabs quick and holds stronger than many other adhesives. It is a commercial product, an is a bit expensive if you do find it. It wouldn't surprise me to find that Buck may be using this stuff :)

I've been down to leroy's shop and he worked for Buck for along time. He buils knives with LocTite, but I cant remember the exact kind. I remember he told me that it was really expensive, several hundreds of dollars but, it will almost never let go.

Thanks. I used the super glue and will see how it holds. I wont carry it next week as I'll be camping and don't want to take the chance of losing the shield out there.

I customize knives, and I use Starbond superglue that is 4x stronger than regular super glue. You need to get it right from the manufacturer at http://www.starbond.com and make sure you get the right one. Read the descriptions. There aren't too many to choose from.
