Super impressed by Emerson Knives

Alright, I wanted to start this thread to find out what it is that makes Emerson Knives so impressive and addictive. I only have one Emerson right now and I have one on the way so my input, while genuine, doesn't really carry the weight of some of you guys who own a lot more and have been using them for a lot longer.

I bought a Commander off Ebay and immediately ran into trouble with it. I was able to break it down and adjust everything that someone threw out of whack on it. Yeah, it was listed as new but looking back I now realize that it wasn't new. Someone had messed with it for sure.

Never had an Emerson before that. Never broke one down. I was super impressed by the fact that I was able to make it function like new. Seriously, the blade locked up so well that it was like the blade and handle were one piece. It amazed me at how few parts there were that could make that happen with that enormous blade. I kept asking if I was missing parts.

I got it working so damn well that I couldn't stop messing with it or leave it alone. Long story short, it's out getting custom work done right now. So I tried carrying and messing with a few different knives while it's away. It doesn't work for me at all. So I end up ordering another Emerson now I'm waiting on two. Which is probably why I find myself starting a thread to talk about it.

I don't think it has everything to do with the knives themselves although that is huge. It's got a lot to do with the company itself. The history of it. The fact that Ernie can come on Bladeforums and post a few things with everyone. The EmersonRep who is available. The whole company is just so human and approachable.

Another thing near and dear to me is the Warrior Commandments. Is there another company that encourages stellar behavior among its fans? I don't know. What makes Emerson Knives so impressive to you? As for now, it's the only brand for me.

Nice post. ^
As I said before, Ernest found a perfect formula.
Folders have come and gone but an Emerson folder always ends up in my pocket.

Did you order another Commander, or a different model? I only own two, as well; a CQC-6 with some kind of nitride coating, and the Lagriffe Neck knife. I don't carry either, however. I usually just carry a Delica,

I ordered a Super Commander. That's not easy either. I have to perform a lot of financial wizardry to make that happen. But make it happen I shall.

The CQC's seem alright, I gotta actually get a hold of one to see how I'd take to them. I really don't prefer anything under 3.5" blade length. I figured that out early on in this hobby.

I feel like I'm getting a better value or something with a bigger blade. Or that I got my money's worth. It's also the weight and the substantial feel too. So in other words, it doesn't seem too small which I'd then perceive as cheap even if that's not the case.

So a Commander and a Super Commander is great. Both are stone wash finishes too because I don't really prefer the black blades. I can turn that satin blade a little in the light and see all different colors, a little more and it seems to be shimmering liquid. It really is a gorgeous blade. I couldn't see all that with a black blade.

You find yourself carrying a Spyderco Delica. I remember when I first joined BF everyone was going on about Spyderco. So much that I almost got one just to see what the hype was about even though they didn't appeal to me at all. I'm sure they're great knives but I'm an Emerson junkie now.

I've never heard of this type of coating on a 6. Mind posting pics when you get a chance?

Emerson is an awesome company for sure. They are simple, functional, reliable, and easy to maintain. OP, you will enjoy the super commander. I have a Super and an Ubr with a Jungle model on the way. It's got to be my favorite design in the Emerson lineup.

This is great to hear. Thank you. I'm sure that Jungle Commander is going to be incredible.

Why I like Emerson Knives...

- Design geared toward function. Verifies the knife as a tool, intended to be used for the purpose in which it was designed. Most companies seem to build folders based on form, or what's pleasing to the eye.

- High quality materials - Foundational and not changed overnight to follow industry trends but rather what reliably works. This shows commitment to design.

- Simplicity of maintenance - I always carry a SAK Cadet, which can disassemble and maintain an Emerson, I would say that's a benefit.

- Track record of quality - Every company has it's moments of shame and glory, but this is based on overall long term performance.

- MADE IN THE USA - 100% materials and labor. Important to some, paramount to others.

- Warranty and customer service - I've yet to have a need to contact them, but word has it they answer the phone.

- Family owned and operated - I don't know Mr. Emerson, I've never met him, but maybe one day I'll get the opportunity. Simply judging from the many articles and interviews I've read and watched, I feel that the beliefs central to his life parallel my own. I'm not much of a club or group guy so I don't belong, but I was raised to believe and strive for exactly what the OBS stands for. Any man that shares a commitment to those beliefs has my respect.

Next will be a PE satin Commander.

I would have to say the history. Though every company has a history....I find Emersons unique.

It's really something to go back and read this subforum from the very beginning. I am trying to piece together the "usual suspects" that seems (from what I have read so far) that it started here. Almost seems like they were breaking rules by hording all the Emerson customs.

But for me it all comes back to one man's vision. I also enjoy how easy it is (like Newknife said) to take down the knife, that comes in handy. And lastly the designs. I Really Like just about every design because they are all practical, even the Gypsy Jack. Made in The United States of America down to the screws. <--That about says it all IMO.
