I appologise in advance if this question has been asked alot in the past.

I am looking for a super light weight knife sharpener for backpack hunting. I at present have and use a Gerber two stage ceramic sharpener (made by Fiskers for Gerber) that has one set of cource and fine sharpening rods (ceramic) contained in a plastic housing that has built in finger grooves for holding it. My friend and I used it to re-sharpen our knives while skinning, butchering, de-boning, and later caping out the two bull elk we shot. I was quite satisfied with its over all performanse as it did a more than acceptable job. It is probubly the best designed sharpener out there for what I am looking for in a super light weight sharpener as it weighs only 2-3ozs and is 2.5"x3" square. It is slightly less than 1/2 the size of a credit card. What I am trying to find out is there a super light weight sharpener out there that will do a better job of re-sharpening my knives?.

Gerber has recently came out with an identicle version of the same sharpener featuring fine and cource diamond rods insted of ceramic. I have bought several, but have not had an oportunity to give it an acid test in the field like its ceramic rodded sibling.

I think this is most likely a case of wishfull thinking as not only are these Gerber sharpeners super light weight and efective, thay arer also quite cheap at little over $3 for the ceramic version and $4 for the diamond. But I am always trying to find what works better or best.

If it is of any help my three hunting knives are made of D2 tool steel, Carbon V steel, and ATS-34 steel.

Like I said I dont think there is a better sharpener out there that is as light weight as my gerbers, and in backpack hunting weight is everything.

Thanks to all who take the time out to help me with this.

You could buy a small, $10 Arkansas stone at Walmart, and learn to use it.
Whetstones have worked for hundreds of years.

Cliff,
Thanks for your info. I will buy the Meerco Sharpenit ASAP. And thanks to all who took the time to help me out on this.

Again, thanks to all.

There is also a Shapren-It Jr. which is a bit smaller.

I have that gray Normark sharpener. It does a decent job when I am away from my Sharpmaker.

I have found that the Lansky Dogdone works wonders. Its light wieght and pusts a razor edge on a knife quickly. Although ill oly use it on the trail, for i like to keep the angle of my blades the same. Since i cannot hold the same angle to save my life.
