Either I am harder on knives than I ever thought (I don't think so), but seem to be having trouble keeping my knife finish intact. Second time in the last month that black seems to be coming off two CRKT knives.
Any superior wax, or protective coating or something I can do?

How coming off? and what kind of coating? After usage?

It is not unusual for paint-type coatings on knives to be damaged by use.

So far all I have done is cut open some cardboard boxes with each other knives and I opened one bubble pack. The coating came right off the tip. What I don't understand is why the M16 Special Forces knife has done great, while the very heavy duty folder -- the loarge Crawford Casper and the First Strike are suffering.

More questions:
1] Is the paint/black coating a diiferent material on these different models of CRKT
2] Does this mean ALL black knives going to look really bad if I use them at all? For some reason the black coating is very common to all the makes and models of knives which I like the best.

If anyone has the answer to these questions, or even a good idea or suggestion please speak up. Thanks again.

I have two M16 series knives, both have coated blades and handles. The blade coating on both of mine seem to be pretty durable and look to be more of a chemical process rather than a paint or epoxy. It reminds me more of a gun blue, even though I know it's stainless steel.

But it does scratch off if cutting cardboard or other abrasive materials.

The painted aluminum surfaces and particularly the steel clip all wear off just form pocket carry. My M16 11k gets the most carry and the clip showed bare metal in spots after a day or two of carry.

Just as a comparison, the black coating on all of the torx screws on my Benchmade Stryker began to peel off imediately. I removed it all and it looks better.

I've slowly started to get away from coated blades and aluminum handles because to me they look prematurely worn. Uncoated blades and natural handles materials ( and G10) get more of a vintage look with use. Of course this is only my opinion, others here have commented that the worn paint and coatings looks good.
