hey guyz how do those little rust eraser blox affect stainless brushed finish look? [going w/the grain of course?

I have about 4 of them. They are very abrasive. I've seen at least one spec'd as using silicon carbide abrasive, which will definitely scratch a polished blade. I'm assuming most or all vendor's versions are from the same supplier, as the few I have were purchased from at least 2 different vendors, years apart, and they all look identical. If you're using them on a satin finish blade, it should be fine. It'll still scratch, but they'll blend in more easily. Just make sure to scrub in a linear direction, so the scratch pattern looks uniform. Just to be sure, I'd test them on something first, before messing up the finish on one of your favorite blades.

If the blade's removable, I'd remove the blade as well to make sure all the visible blade has a consistent scratch pattern.

yeah, i was wondering how bad the brushed, pretty satin finish on my carbon 5 cold steel would be affected too..

If you just need to scrub some rust off your blade, you might try some #0000 steel wool, or a brass-bristled wire brush, with some WD-40. Either one of those will likely do the job, and won't be so aggressive on your blade. The #0000 steel wool is very, very fine and isn't as hard as the blade steel itself, and the brass brush would be even softer, so they shouldn't scratch. In fact, I'd try one of those first, before using the rust eraser block.

David--i use #0000 all the time cleaning firearms etc...but just trying to smooth out uneven looking scratch pattern in some of my brushed satin stainless and high carbon blades can be confusing. I use a medium/light coat of vasoline on the high carbon stuff. Cheap...works great for storage, no rust, easy to remove--but if some rust or pitting pops up, i wanna be able to restore factory finish...
Not worried about knocking scale etc off an axe,hawk,machete...its what do i do after..i guess the obvious answer is a clear duracoat...if the steel looks like crap b4 u put the clear on...same ball o' wax---square one...dont have a beadblast setup or a big shop to do alot of this.
All it takes is one mirror polish session on anything completely by hand and youll be ready for the funny farm!
