I've been having a little love affair with my Sage II every since I got it. In fact, I went ahead and got the Sage I but its a safe queen. Nothing has been able to knock that Sage II out of my pocket and I've added a number of high end knives since the Sage II. Freaking awsome knife!!

So it occurred to me with the recent evolvement of the Caly to 3.5 inches and the growth in the Para II, that a larger Sage my be on the board.

A 10% growth spurt to 3 3/8ths for the blade and 4 1/2 for the frame would be beyond wicked I think.

Has anyone else had dreams of a bigger Sage?

I would have bought a Sage a loooong time time ago if it had a longer

blade and handle. I have to have a handle at least 4 3/4 +/- to fit

my hand. The Maxix 2, Chokwe, and bigger are the size Spydies I like.;)

I'm open to it and hope it works but my main concern is the fit of the sage as it is now, perfect. I'm a large man with large hands (6' 2", 250 lbs and proportionate hands) yet the current Sage 2 falls perfectly into my hand as is, opens with my thumb right where it needs to be throughout the opening radius and my fingers fall right into place where the designer intended them to be.

I judge my EDC by this criteria. Even though I can't stick to just one size knife and own several smaller and larger, I find that the PPT and Sage 2 size works great for my comfort of use and operation.

As much as I revere the Military, the first thing that happens when I grab it is my thumb falls into the Spyder Hole right off the bat but as I open the knife, somewhere within the opening radius I have to choke up on the handle to keep my thumb planted firmly in the Spyder Hole because my hand was too far back at first.

I agree with you but if they can fit a 3.5 inch blade into the Stretch handle then they can probably do it with the Sage. The Sage and Stretch both fit my hands perfectly so I think it has more to do with handle shape/ergos than size when it comes down to handles fitting hands.

Perhaps . . .

Not really. The Stretch and the C83 Persian have the 3.5" blade slot locked up for me. Only thing that might change my mind would be if it were a bolstered, dent-free midlock.

This pretty much describes the Manix 2.

Now that I see them side by side, I see the blades are almost exactly the same profile.

However, I would love to see the Sage enlarged just enough to get the Manix blade size but the keeping the Sage body proportions.

I don't see the Sage being increased in size. It is a platform to try all the different lock styles while size, shape, and blade steel type stays the same. Changing the size would mean that all the variations that come out will have to be in two sizes.

I also think the paramilitary 2 was redesigned to address minor issues and not to make a bigger knife. We don't have any stats on it yet but it has only a marginally longer blade and was probably gained by changing the pivot location and not by increasing handle length. I would be surprised if the blade is any more than 3/16" longer than the old one.

Might see a Titanium Manix 2, though....

No.
I am fine with R2, Persian and Manix2. Will be even better after Caly3.5 will be released. May be para or para2 will suit your needs?

Exactly what I was thinking. I like the Sage as small as it is. One of my only knives I can use almost anywhere and not pull any odd looks. Unless I'm out in the woods, I haven't really found any need for a bigger knife.

the body proportions are about the same as the sage. the manix 2's ergonomics are also better than the sage IMHO.

Guys I'm just thinking outloud about the possibility that Sal and Eric might decide to up-size the Sage. I do believe that there would still be suttle differences in the Manix II and an upsized Sage. Maybe enough to justify the knife. Primarily, I think the knives coming out of Taiwan are currently Spyderco's most well executed knives and a large Sage appeals to me.

I suppose I'm thinking of a larger Sage II in part because I just can't warm up to the Manix II. I do not like the plastic spacer on the back nor do I like its jimping. Frankly, the Mini-Manix is my favorite Spyderco and it was just about perfect.

To be honest, I was just interested in everybody's thoughts about the idea not looking for a knife suggestion. God knows I have way to many knives already. I happen to be on pre-order for the Para 2 and I'm looking forward to it with great anticipation. Along with the Para 2, the Caly 3.5 is a must have for me.

But you guys chew on that idea that Sypderco's best built knives are coming out Taiwan:)

They are the best out of the factory doing the GB, Sage 2 and PPT for sure. Not sure if it's the same factory for all of them - the F&F sure begs to assume that.

As for your comment about not warming up to the Manix 2, that is a very fair feeling when arguing it's similarity to the Sage 2. If you take the silhouette of each you see a lot of outline similarity but in reality the Sage 2 is certainly way more organic in its aura. The Manix 2, while I'm fine with it in my rotation, is no doubt much more industrial and figuratively contrived for sure. That perimeter jimping is still up in the air with me and while I am a proponent of the caged ball lock there is something beautifully simple in the Ti open construction of the Sage 2 in form and function and the RIL is more natural feeling to operate.

Aside from being beyond wicked, it would most certainly be beyond legal in some places in the Northeast. With new restrictions popping up similar to what New York has recently put in place, dreams may all they ever end up being. I don't think that most poeple would see any real useable difference between 3 3/8" and 3 1/2". It's not like one knife would do anything better than the other.
