Super Whistle = Super Range ?

I just stumbled onto the "Storm" whistle thread. From what I've read, they claim that the Storm is nearly twice as loud as the next best whistle out there. (Does that mean twice as many decibels?)

Most importantly, if it is, in fact, twice as loud, does that mean that it's signal carries twice as far? (Or is it just twice as annoying to the whistle blower?)

How big are they? ... Would I need an extra fanny pack? :D

Now I'm feeling guilty for not getting pics up on the whistle page! Marion Poff sent me a bunch of whistles to test a while back. The least I could have done is get pics up!
The decibel scale isn't linear so a few more get you a lot more noise. The storm is loud and also big - more than twice the size of regular whistles. Being plastic though it's not heavy.
I'd figure on a kilometre range under quiet conditions - much less with lots of wind noise and especially if wind is blowing toward whistler.
Whistles are cheap and light - super deals!

Thanks Jimbo.

I didn't realize that decibel levels were a non-linear measurement. That explains some past mental puzzlements! I found pictures of the "Storm" brand whistles and some info on equipped.com., and just had a peek at your web site, too ... very, very nice! I must get back there again, soon. Lots of good stuff!

After all your trials, do you have a favorite whistle, all things considered? Does the Storm blow away :o the competition, as far as best range?

I put up some pictures at the bottom of the whistle page - just click the thumbnails.
Naturally I went without some of the whistles that Marion sent me and so forth. Takes th eold guy time.
Anyway you should be able to get a fast idea of sizes. Just note that the Acme 2000 has "wings" for refs to thumb hold it and these can be removed. Also plastic is light so a storm really doesn't weigh that much more.

Thank you, Jimbo. Sounds good to me. I'm putting an order together, and plan to get a "Storm" for everyone in the family. Can't wait to see if I can call in ol' Three Toes. ;)

Jimbo - Nice whistle page. Have you ever had a chance to use a Jet Scream from Ultimate Survival? I was wondering how it would compare to the other whistles described on your page.

Hi Jimbo,

Nice page, if you cut the sides of the ACME 2000 you get a super flat whistle (3/8" high) that's easy to carry and put in a kit.
Even though I have tinnitus at one ear and carry an hearing aid to partly block the ever present ringing and improve my stereo hearing I find the ACME 2000 hurting my ears even without the hearing aid.
I carry some Bilsom earplugs or use some Spark-lite tinder tabs to protect my ears from the sound of the ACME 2000.

Best Scouting wishes,

Bagheera

Hi Bagheera!
You bet I'll be trimming that whistle. I read your stuff and learn!

Nathan:
I keep trying to get a Jet Scream. Hopefully soon! I like the flat profile and people sure seem to think they're loud too.

Jimbo, if you get a Jet Scream, let us know what you think about it. I've never had a chance to try one.

I have a Jet Scream and two Fox 40s. The Jet Scream strikes me as a little louder but not by much.

Guyon:

Is that loudness test up close of at some considerable distance? Also the fact that I'm getting older means that I hear lower tones much better - but young people with me heard higher tones much louder - at a distance. Depends on the age of the people looking for you if you need a whistle!
