With pretty rare exception, the US-made models come with US-made steel.

Out of curiosity, what do you feel Superblue would do that M4, 52100, Rex45, or Maxamet (which hasn't been announced, but presumably is coming eventually) wouldn't satisfy?

true, and i like & respect that they keep it all homegrown. this is an exception i would like to see. m4, cruwear, 52100 are all in my current military lineup, and they perform superbly. i preordered rex 45, so that's data that i will have whenever it's available (any idea as to when?) as well. they're all easy enough to maintain. superblue is just a request based on how sharp it gets in so little time. i had my dragonfly hair popping sharp last week after extensive use just stropping on my belt for 30 seconds. the others cannot claim that, though 52100 comes close. would it be better in a chef's knife? yes. is it practical? no. but spyderco takes the chances other companies don't. they're bold and groundbreaking. gusts why i think this would work. as for maxamet on a military, last i heard it wasn't happening, though that could be (and hopefully is) just hearsay. my maxamet manix is fantastic, and only ever needs stropped, but it's no military and the frn sucks compared to g10. superblue with white g10 would be ideal because it's great steel and leaves the rit dye option open.

A Millie in Super Blue does not appear likely due to raw Japanese steel generally not being exported. A Police 4 sprint might be a possibility?

doesn't japan import the ore to make the steel though? seems they can hardly call it their own.

That’s like saying the cake isn’t the chefs because he imported the ingredients.

I’d love to see that Superblue police 4 with some shade of blue handle though.

true, but the chef makes the cake for whoever buys it; he doesn't keep it all to himself or say only other chefs can eat it. a police would be cool, too, though i am partial to the military.

Agreed, if I make cookies with flour I bought at Price Chopper, are they my cookies or Price Chopper's cookies. Sorry, but I am taking full credit and full ownership.

If Spyderco makes a blade with steel made by Crucible is it a Spyderco or a Crucible blade?

You have stumbled into logical fallacy.

Where did you find the info about Japan not exporting steel? I found a 2016 report of Japanese steel exports from the Department of Commerce that states Japan is the 2nd largest steel exporter in the world.

I thought Sal said they chose not to import Seki steels to the US, opting to make it in its country of origin as it is more economical.

I think he just means blade steels.

They are tight with certain steels. I believe they will not export ZDP189. There was however a ZDP Leek and I always wondered about that one?

Spyderco does make the Autonomy with H1 but that is the only Spyderco I am aware of that uses Japanese steel that is not made in Japan.

The ZDP thing is interesting because they aren’t even overly open about its exact composition. I guess that one is their baby.

Also just remembered that Kershaw is actually owned by KAI so they may have workarounds.

Either way, we have seen Japanese Spydies with S30V and K390 and we have seen American Spydies with H1 so while the logistics still come into play I guess anything is possible.

Superblue comes from Japanese ore. V-Toku2 comes from Swedish ore. Don’t know about the rest.

I believe it is not the steel composition,,, it is the heat treatment process.
If someone does a sloppy HT on the proprietary steel,,, the steel gets a bad reputation.
This is especially true with ZDP-189 and Hitachi will not sell to just any Japanese company, they must pass a Q.C. evaluation for the HT.

Regards,
FK
