hi all! i do not own a spyderco but i have been bitten by the bug! i am considering getting a superleaf but first want your input. if i get it it would be replacing my large ritter griptilian as my outdoor knife. what i want to know is how it measures up as an outdoor or camp knife. is it a good slicer (i know it has a thicker blade than the gritter, its like 4mm!)? specifically i would use it to gut and clean fish and game, so it would be around water and guts alot. if any of you happen to own the ritter grip and can compare that would be great! esp with pics! and please try to not be biased towards the superleaf! its either that or a sage 2 to replace a smaller edc. thank you all ahead of time for your input, looking forward to your comments!!!

I think the Superleaf has a much more solid feel that the Grip because of the G10 vs the hollow FRN. The blade is a little thicker but the lack of a thumb stud kind of evens it out because the Spyderco can slice all the way through stuff without worrying about the stud getting hung up. I have the regular Grip not the Ritter, so I don't know if pix would help at all.

My main dislike about the Superleaf is something that others find to be a positive feature. It has a fairly large choil. Some people love that because it makes it easy to choke up on the blade for fine work, but to me it just takes up space that could be edge. For you use in gutting fish it might be ideal. I do think it gives you more bang for the buck than a Sage 2 would. The compression lock is actually stronger than the framelock of the Sage according to Sal.

Have you considered the Paramilitary 2? It's actually cheaper than the Superleaf.

that was my main concern, whether the blade would be too thick to slice efficiently through a fish. and i did notice the choil as you mentioned. the one thing i hate about the ritter is that cheap feeling frn too, and since its a large one it only has partial liners. weight is not an issue. maybe i should just buy from a place that has a good return policy and try it out?

oh and actaully no i havent considered the paramilitary 2 because its too spearpoined for my tastes, i like more upward curve on the cutting edge like on a drop point.

The Superleaf has recently displaced my large Grip (556) in EDC. Still love the Grip, but the Superleaf is a lot more knife at about the same size, IMO.

I can't address the question of how either would clean game or fish as I prefer FBs for those tasks. The open construction of the Superleaf should make it easier to clean though.

The Superleaf is heavier with a thicker blade. While the large Grip has a great feel in the hand, I find the Superleaf feels more secure due to the shape and the G10.

I find that the choil and FFG blade make the 'leaf more versatile.

Both take an edge well and are easy to touch up.

While I love the Axis, the Compression Lock is the one lock available (today) that I like better. Though it is not ambi friendly.

Good hunting!

yea i hear ya, i got a fixed blade for those bigger tasks like if i go camping etc, but i do a lot of day fishing with light gear so i would normally just have my folder on me on those occasions. good to know the superleaf is so versatile with that choil. i think i will def get it. i got the ritter a week ago so i know i can still return it.
