I'm looking for somewhere I can get 440c in 1/2" roundstock. Well actually any stainless that I can still forge would work. Thanks

i believe that when you forge stainless it air hardens, so if you did in fact do it you'd have to deal with a hardened piece of steel

Jamie, er... Michael said it best. Stainless CAN be forged, but it really sux to do. It don't move under that hammer very well at the low temps required to forge it.

The chromium is NOT burned out when you forge stainless steel.

We have a friend named Bernard Sparks forges 440C. He learned years ago from Gil Hibben. Back then 440C was not available in sheet so they bought rod stock and forged it into blades.

Bernard showed me a 440C bowie he used to cut down a 10" evergreen tree. When the tree fell the knife would still shave hair from his arm.

thanks guys..... i was mis-informed about the chromium, wish i had known that sooner.... i'd have made a whole set of 440c kitchen knives with integral bolsters by now!.....i caught that one higgy! ;) :D
