I'm having a pair of full integral hunters made. And i'm considering using BG-42 The maker i'm using doesn't have access to BG-42.Is there a supplier someone could recommend that carries BG-42 in a thickness dimension of.500
that would sell in small quantities?

I don't know if you'll find BG42 readily available in thicknesses that are appropriate for an integral hunter. I had a conversation with Ricardo Velarde who is pretty well known for making exactly that kind of knife at last year's Solvang Custom show. Ricardo likes BG42 and said he eventually got frustrated enough to contact the mill and bought an entire billet of BG42 so he could have it cut to the thickness he wanted. From my conversation with him, it was a long and expensive proposition and considering the price of raw materials these days, I don't think he is interested in selling any of it. I'm not sure he got a lifetime supply, but it was enough that he won't need to buy steel for several years at the least and was bought at a much better per lb price than can be had today so it's a bit of a hedge against inflation for him.

Try contacting Tim, last year he was the contact. Tim might be able to sell you some drops. He was the contact for BG-42 and 20CV, in small quantities.

Jeff thanks for the info. Do you know if Tim has an e-mail contact? If not i'll send a letter and see if he can help me out.

I'm a newbie maker, (if you call someone who has been making a few knives a year for 15 years a newbie) who has recently started making a lot more knives and recently attended a one on one three day forging seminar. I'm getting better.

I also work for Timken (on the bearing side, not the steel side). If I want to purchase it, I have to go through Admiral also.

My whole point is to just say Thank You for purchasing our steels!! I have discussed the specs and properties of the 20CV with our metallurgists and engineers. They've told me that Timken 20CV outperforms S30V on Edge Retentioin and stainless properties, while being as tough as S30V.

If anyone needs heat treating specifications for either the BG42 or the 20CV, please just holler at me here or call me on my cell phone at (330) 284-3103.

Several years ago I bought some BG-42 directly from the mill when I was in the States. I had it precision ground in Dallas and about 25% of the order was so twisted it could not be ground. I had to have it annealed and straightened in Germany.

I tried contacting Timken Latrobe for pricing and sales information for BG-42 in Europe about 6 months ago. Finally after about 3 emails asking if there was a sales office in Europe, I recived a one word reply, "Yes." with no contact or other info. I took that to mean they were not interested in my business.

Then when I read about 20CV I contacted Timken in England via the telephone. The fellow on the phone was at least polite. I asked for a quote and delivery information. I never heard from them again.

I've come to the conclusion I'm better off dealing with Crucible, who seem to actually value my business.
