Is it just me or are other people also having problems with suppliers? For the last 3 months its been one mixed up order, backorder or lost order after another, sending the wrong stuff, out of stock on everyday things like black linen micarta or steel. At Admiral steel it takes 2 weeks just for them to ship your order, every time in the last 3 month when I order form K&G online I get a call later in the day saying they are out of at least one of the items I want. Is anyone else having these problems?

I have seen the suppliers list on this forum (I can't seem to find it right now) but I was wondering if anyone has a really good supplier they can recommend, I hate having to order form 3 or 4 different suppliers.

Thansk

Les, the links page is gone, since the crash.

Admiral Steel has a thread going here now about how they are trying to improve service, etc. Maybe you ought to post your problems with them on it. Maybe they'll try to fix it. Yeah, right. ;) :D

I'm a software guy. When I see the 'shopping' software most of these smaller companies use I cringe.

I always phone in my orders. Never had a problem with K&G or Admiral. Heck, for optimum service try Sheffield. They don't even use a computer (they told me).

Sheffield Knifemakers has shown me the best prices and variety, including steel for a small scale hobbiest like me.

Here is the link Sheffield Supply

The only suppliers I have NEVER had a problem with is Halpern Titanium, Pop's, and Texas Knifemaker's Supply.

The K&G problem has just been in the past few months, they were my preferred supplier but a few weeks ago when i tried to order they were out of 3 or 4 of the items i wanted today I couldnt get the steel or the micarta, Admiral is a nightmare that I may have to just deal with and order well in advance bacause their prices are pretty good. I was just looking at sheffield and I'm going to give them a try, the prices are a little high on some stuff but for the basics they seem ok and it looks like a few of you say the service is good, and Mike thanks for the list, i'll look at those links. ;) Steve I know exactly what you mean about the on-line shopping, Koval may be the worst in that department, K&G at least has a shopping cart but the way the products are listed is a nightmare. My problem is I work nights and get off early in the morning and sleep till 4pm, most of these places arent open when I'm awake, I do try to stay up untill 9am when i need to phone an order in but its hard.

Thanks for the help

I have never had a problem with MSC. Superb service, HUGE wonderful catalog (also available on CD). No, they are not a knife making supplies Co. and they arent the place to get belts and they aren't a deep discount house, but you can get everything else, including some of the steel, O-1, A-2. D-2 (used to have W-1 in round stock but I dont think they do anymore) brass, bronze, parts to build your tools, drill bits out the whazoo, etc. Did I say superb service? :D There heads are screwed on correctly folks, call them on the toll free line to place a number, fax them an order, place a web order, mail them an order. I faxed them a hand written order from the day job for about $300 worth of small tools and stuff, must have been 25 items. Got a phone call to my office 10 minutes later by some one who went over each item verbally. They are geared to handle lots of small daily orders from tool rooms and maintenance shops, so you dont have to be big customer to get their attention. Other than MSC, all I need is a belt supplier and a steel supplier. (I have used Admiral for steel in the past, called them and had no trouble at all)

The best website I've ever seen, the fastest and best service is the industrial supply place www.mcmaster.com ...While they are not a knife supplier as such they have thousands of items.

www.useenco.com
alot like msc but cheaper. fastest shipping I have ever had too. I placed an internet order for my milling vise and it was here the next day for only $8 for a 50lb vise. never had to wait more than two days for anything.
I buy all of my files, drills, and taps from them.
