I'm making use of this paycheck on friday, buying knifemaking stuff. Starting with stock removal, will move to forging after I'm decent at this(or next summer). I'm getting free 5160[think it's the right steel], so that's no problem(broken truck suspension from the courier company my dad works for)...

plan is to buy a belt/disk sander[ 1x42 and a 9" disk] {SiC belts in 220, 400 and 600 is the plan to buy for belts), muslin and 200grit wheels for the 6" benchtop grinder, and a few diamond bits for the dremel.

have both an electric(8k rpm) and airpower(5k rpm on 300psi) angle grinder, 4.5" disks on both... and a pair of dremels(my cheap one(1/4 price) gets about 2x faster than the dremel brand one)...

as to materials I was thinking stag(2 guys at work have leftover from this fall's trip) and linen micarta... until I can get some wood here other than the dymondwood laminate they stock. Have to order kydex myself for sheaths, will go to leather when I get better and make them worthy of that.

HT is 8-10cdn for a knife, through house of tools, 2 week max from ship to recieve back.

I have enough sandpaper and sharpening equipment(200-800 alumina oxide stones, spydie ceramics, and 80-1500 paper), so thats part of it.

Any tips? Books I should get, different grit belts(60-320 alumina oxide belts are cheap and plentiful)... anything?

Yes, get a respirator with two stage cartridges, organic vapor/formaldehyde, plus cotton prefilters, and the adapter that will hold them on over the cartridges.
Everything in knifemaking seems to be toxic. Be safe, and live to make many knives.

The best(IMO) book I can think of is the Barney/Loveless book, 'How To Make Knives'. It covers both stock removal, and forging. It even shows two types of sheath making.
You can get it at http://www.amazon.com , or most knifemakers supply houses.
Good luck to you. :D

Mike> guess thats pretty much a standard in the enclosed shops of today...
