Guys

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=707760

i have been reading about the accusations hurled out to SOG for their product that shows resemblance to the spyderco model.

well i am a sog fan and i think that this issue has been blown out of proportion.

i want you guys to check the following knives which are similar to sog and spyderco and lets find out who copied whom.

all the knives look similar to me.
i havent looked at the other sog models that were discusses but i would love to hear from the sog critics on this particular model.
let the discussion begin!

I personnally think now that SOG just took a useful feature and used it. I see this as blown out of proportion. Seriously its like saying all new polymer frames pistols copied off Glock or whatever. I will still buy SOG granted I was never a SOG folder fan but I will use anything that is affordable and useful. I can only use a folder that has the hole feature so I am happy that SOG offered it.

I personally think many people overreacted. SOG is not the only company borrowing designs. There are other companies that have been borrowing other designs for years but somehow, SOG seems to be the only one taking heat for it.

Perhaps they should have included something like "inspired by the Spyderco Endura...." in the product description. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

im a big sog fan and i too think its been blown out of proportion. sog just took a good idea and added it to their line of knives.knife companies have been doing this for a long time.i support sog, spyderco, and benchmade, knife companies who all make knives that are similar in appearance.the sogzilla is actually a very good knife,i havent had any issues with mine yet.

It's all good. The only form of copying I can't put up with is where a company takes a great knife and makes their own cheap imitation, but keeps the name and branding of the original in an effort to fool buyers into thinking it IS the original. I have no difficulty differentiating between a SOG and a Spyderco when they're side-by-side.

Well don't the critics have anything to say.cmon I was expecting more from u Guys

I think it all got said, and re-said ad nauseam in the thread Chris recently locked.

Pretty much agree.
These companys have been at this for a long time and are more likely to know who is really borrowing from who, and are in a much better position to judge if any action is reasonable or necessary.

Exactly.
Some of the alleged "copies" are a bit subjective. In scanning that previous long thread I noticed one example: The SOG Toothlock and the BM Rift. Well, I own both a Toothlock and two Rifts. Ok, there is some similarity of blade shape, but in no way would I say the Toothlock is a copy of the Rift, nor pretending to be one....they are totally different animals.

Borrowing is the right word.
How many companies have borrowed the drop point from loveless or the liner lock from michael walker?they all have.
Sog makes excellent blades and provide great designs.
Period!

I have owned SOG knives since 1986 when I purchased an original S1 Bowie #1242 at age 18. They have also served me well in a military combat environment. I will always be fond of and use SOG knives. I do realize that knives and the companies that produce them change greatly over time. I owned an original Tomcat and Stingray years ago when the lockback was king. Try to find a folder that has a .200 inch blade like the Tomcat today. The Stingray had a .160 inch thick blade. Trends have greatly changed in the folder market today. There are many similar designs based on what's popular or innovative at the moment. I prefer SOG fixed blades and even though they are manufactured in Taiwan and not Seki-Japan, I still expect the same quality. I am quite pleased with my three SOG Bowie design knives that are made in Taiwan. I do have original Seki-Japan made models to compare them to. I will continue to buy the SOG Bowie design, thank you very much.

If you don't like a particular SOG model, buy another model. What happened to the SCUBA/DEMO? Poor sales killed it. The same could happen to those some people think are unethical.

Knives like the SCUBA/DEMO or Recon Bowie are more niche market. Collectors and fans of classic military knives buy them up for their collections. You do see them for sale once in a blue moon but, most will stay in the collection forever.

The point was that if it doesn't sell they'll stop making it.

if you were looking for an argument over the copying of spyderco designs then you should really check out the sticky presented my the owner of spyderco in their forum. It's called class!

In response to your picture, the only real similarity the crkt has with the others is an opening hole. The boker has an opening hole and midlock, similar to some spyderco designs but not one in particular that I can think of. Many companies use opening holes and midlocks. They are great ideas and if someone can incorporate certain elements from something that works well in a new or improved design then great. Byrd knives are a product of Spyderco so naturally they will share similarities. The Sogzilla is still a disgusting rip off of the Endura.

The SOGzilla is just a blatant rip-off of the Spyderco Endura.

And the official company response was both insulting and idiotic.

I will certainly not be buying any SOG knives in the future.
Nor will I recommend them to others.

If SOG wants to reclaim a lot of former customers there should be an apology for the rip-off and an apology for the previous dishonest official reply, and production of the SOGzilla should be stopped immediately and the unsold models recalled.

But if SOG doesn't own up to the blatant theft of Spydero's intellectual property, then they probably will continue to go down the toilet as word spreads in the knife community, and beyond.

Just my opinion.

I have had a number of Spyderco knives and I've enjoyed them.
I have had a number of SOG knives and I have loved having them in my pocket or on my hip also. Much like my benchmades, remington, busse's, rats and sebenza's.
Now it seems they put a spyderco like hole in the blade of the SOGZILLA, (much like benchmade, boker and crkt did on various models).
I don't really care about manufacturer's cat fights. If I were employed by one I would take a side. Otherwise its making a black hole out of a spyder hole.
With or without this particular hole the sogzilla looks like crap.
I don't like this knife regardless. I mean look at it! Its no Tomcat.
As for my old beloved Spydies, the opening hole was by no means a selling feature for me. It even makes some of their blade geometry look a little awkward at times.
This whole pink panty meltdown over HOLES makes me think I should invest more in Strider, Chris Reeves and Hinderer while the kids fight it out on the school yard.
At least until Jerry gives us a Busse folder.
But ya, if SOG comes out with a new KICK ASS design? Sure, I might grab it.

The discussion isn't about SOG using the Hole. The knife also uses the Endura's handle shape, brand insignia placement, lock placement, blade grind...The only thing SOG did differently was the clip placement.

It's a blatant rip-off copy of a model that could be considered one of the original "Tactical" knives.

As Dano said, it's not about just stealing the idea of the Sypderco hole....SOG stole the entire knife design.

It's the theft of intellectual property.
And it's despicable of SOG.
