Supporting Local Knifemakers

I've begun collecting custom blades from local knifemakers, some well-known, others just starting or not known nationallly at all.

Their products seem very well executed, finished beautifully, custom-made for me, and reasonably priced for custom knives.

Here's the question:

I am supporting a local craft that needs my $$$ to continue to thrive.

But for about the same price, I can buy some nationally known makers, and have a chance of my purchases actually going up in value.

I don't think I'm wasting my $$$ buying from part-time local knifemakers.

Do you?

So far my local customs include Les Adams, Larry Patterson, and Larry Dougherty. :):):)

Absolutely not! Do you like the knives that you are purchasing? If so that is what really matters. Do you buy your knives with the hope that they will increase in value? Even if you do, how do you know that those local makers won't someday become famous. Maybe someday all your knives will be worth more than you paid for them. If not, you still bought knives that you liked and that you hopefully got good use out of.

drshame,I have seen Larry Patterson's work and it is nice. Both him and Les are in the FKA.I sell the majority of my knives within a 50 mile radius.Dave:)

Larry showed the knife he made for me at the FKA, and he believes it helped him with his membership.

I feel good supporting local craftsmen..and for me....that's all I can hope for.

I ran into a few local makers at a gun show a while back, and I purchased a knife from the one that lived closest too me. I overpaid for it for sure, but I enjoyed talking with him and helping him to make at least one sale at the show. I discovered he had a computer and used the internet but was unable to get him to join BFC. IMO, BFC is one of the best ways for a maker to become nationally known since they can show their knives to everyone without leaving their house.

The makers I bought from is Glenn Long from Dunnellon but I haven't found much info on him.

There are quite a few EXTREMELY talented "Local" Makers that are on the VERGE OF GREATNESS. But whether they make it big or just make it, as long as I LIKE what they do, I WILL buy from them.
I have asked Dan Gray, AKA GRAYMAKER to make me a very special knife. I did not choose Dan because he is from MAINE, I asked Dan because I believe his work is AWESOME.
Steve Hill lives right around the "corner" from My Mother-in-Law who lives on top of Lempster Mountain in NH. He is another GREAT New England ( and NATIONAL)Maker. One day, I hope to call Mr. Hill.
I would love to be able to afford a Moran, Loveless or a Scagel:eek:  HOPEFULLY one day I might, but IMHO, I look at the knife, and NOT the MAKER when deciding what to buy. Is that the way a NEWBIE should be entering the world of custom Knives?.....wolf

MERRY CHRISTMAS;)
