I recently purchased a new Custom Lightfoot folder (Max Velocity). It's my first custom and a real beauty...but...I just wish it had a lanyard hole.

Would I be crazy to have someone drill one for me? I'd never consider doing it myself, but I've been toying with the idea of paying someone who is experienced to do it. Can drilling a hole compromise the integrity of the knife in any way (large enough for 3mm nylon cord or paracord)? Could I be asking for trouble down the road with regard to damage or wear & tear? I've seen some folks here do great custom work on their customs or production knives. Am I crazy and should I leave well enough alone?

I haven't made a decision yet either way but figured I'd get some opinions/experiences before I decide. Love to hear your thoughts.

Obligatory proud new papa shots :)

Have you considered asking Mr. Lightfoot to do it?

or

Since I see it's clipped tip-up, get a spare clip, install it, and drill just large enough of a hole it the clip to accomodate your cord. Then, you can always put the original back on and return the knife to unmodified condition.

A small enough hole it the clip shouldn't hinder it's strength or tension.

or

If you're the type that removes his clips, replace the clip entirely with a small bracket (see lovely drawing) that provides a tie point.

I would have to agree. As this is a 'custom', have Mr. Lightfoot customize it for YOU. He may wince at the prospect of vitiating his 'perfect' design but, hey... different strokes. Your request is not entirely unreasonable.

Good quality photos there patrick. Did you shoot them yourself?

I tried to photograph my knives recently and they came out badly. I used both dark and light backgrounds but I couldn't get good light on the blade either way.

Patrick, I don't know what the back-spacers look like, but might you be able to loop the lanyard around the last spacer?

Thats CF knife #4?

That's right. Sounds kind of obsessive when you put it in writing like that :)

Thanks. Photography's a hobby so I enjoy breaking out the camera equipment for a few knife photos.

Yeah I was hoping for a shot of that myself. I use the bottom spacer for a lanyard on allot of my knives.

Good idea guys, I'll give that a shot. A lot easier than sending it to Greg or someone else.

Man....you posted those pics twice this week!!!!

You're really rubbing it in....you're actually making me want to save up for a custom!!!!

The finish on that knife is superb....

Since this has to do with attaching lanyards to knives...
Anyone know where I'd be able to buy lanyards, like the type that came with my Microtech Socom Elite?

TADgear has some good prices on paracord (100' for $6.75+s/h -- and a good knife selection); or check your local REI/EMS/camping supply store. (Not knowing what your SOCOM came with, you could also try nylon boot laces for a thinner cord.)
