Hey everyone,
Im kinda interested in both of these knives. One is the Surefire Alpha, a ver nice looking blade, good handle, s30v steel, however it is a large size knife. I have a Benchmade 732 which is about an inch smaller than the alpha.
On the other hand there is the Cold Steel Hatamoto. It has a 4 inch blade made of San Mai III. I have heard some mixed reviews about this knife stating that the San Mai III is not all that it could be and that overall the knife is just mediocre. Both knives are around the same price and are very good. Please give me advice.

I usually go by the reviews, make sure you read at least 2. If you're interested in the Hamamoto, you may want to look into buying an Emerson. IMO the Camillus tanto Dominator is a really excellent choice, if you want a tanto.

Of those two, I'd go for the Surefire Alpha.

Looks like the street-price is approximately the same. They are both 'fighters." But, the Alpha looks to have a more general use friendly blade.

San Mai versus S30V is a toss-up for me, but I'd go for the S30V in this case. I have a CS San Mai knife, and to me its primary advantage would be in a large fixed blade knife for increased toughness.

Looks wise, I'd go Alpha again. I don't mind American tantos, so I don't cut down on that score.

Both are higher priced pieces, and for that I am skeptical of Cold Steel unless I handle the knife I'm buying.

I own a surefire alpha and its ok,very high priced, its a little too big for me for EDC. I've had a cold steel hatamoto on back order for at least 8 months. I'll give you a review if it ever shows up.
But remember the hatamoto is san mai III

I can't agree with that. The CRKT model 7 is nice, but it's wide geometry makes it a pretty lousy cutter. I'm sure his handmade stuff is better, and the surefire knife looks good too, but I wouldn't just accept this because his name is on it.

IMO, the handle of the Hamamoto looks backward. I'd prefer a bit of a guard on the front side.
