My wife has a Surefire L1...maybe about 2 years old or so. Anyways, it will only come on in low output and will not go to high. Have tried a few different batteries with no luck.

Somebody told me to clean all the contact areas. I dont want to tear into it on my own without knowing what I am doing.

Anybody know how to maintain this light and can tell me step by step what to do? Would like to try this before sending it back to SF.

Thanks!!

It's not too difficult to clean the contact areas. I would try first with using a rubber eraser, such as the pink ones at the ends of your average No.2 pencils. Rub lightly just enough to remove any rust or build-up. If that doesn't quite work, you can also try using a cotton swap dabbed in rubbing alcohol, cleaning out the threads. Make sure to remove any o-rings before doing so though. After letting it thoroughly dry, try it out.

Go to Radio Shack and pick up the combo pack of DeOxit and ProGold. Shoot them into/onto any contact areas (DeOxit first, wait til dry, then ProGold). If that doesn't work, send it into Surefire, they'll take care of you.

The high and low mode is controled by a resistor in the tail cap. Use a multimeter on amp setting and with the tailcap off and the batteries exposed touch the - lead to the top rim of the body tube and the + lead to the negative of the battery. The light should come on in high and give you a amp reading of how much current is being drawn from the battery. If the light comes on in high mode you will know its a bad tailcap, call surefire and they will send you a new tailcap without the need for you to send in the light.
