Surface conditioning belts

Hi all I am just wondering at what point in grit progression to use surface conditioning belts and what to do after very fine belt to get to a more mirror polish?
Would a cork belt be next?
How to cork belts work as opposed to buffing? I take it you don’t use one belt for every compound
