hey guy's,

is it possable to surface grind a slightly bowed blade??its a folder blade, 3/16" thick
and ss damascus.i didn't catch it in time to straighten it.its a very small bow, but i need
it ground anyway to evenly remove decarb. what would you's suggest?

I would think that the magnet would straighten it out during grinding but the bow would still be there after grinding

Try a 3 point rod setup in a machinists vise and go very slowly. Its amazing how hard
steel can be and still tweaked to straight.

Well if the magnet is strong enough to pull it flat, thats fine. after the flats are done i can easily grind the bow
out as its near the tip, after the blade is fully ground it should'nt be an issue.

i have tried straightening after heatreat once, still have the broken blade to prove it :),longer blades may be
easier but these little folder blades are a real bugger.

Shawn,
Can you get away with doing another cycle at tempering temp (or slightly lower)? Clamp it between two plates with a bit of a shim to slightly overcorrect the bend and place in the oven. I've never had to do this, but there was a whole thread about it here recently.
Good luck bro.

If you try to grind the bow out on a magnet you will have to use shims to grind the bow out. If you don't the blade will spring back after the magnet is released. Just go slow and flip often and you can grind it out.

I like to grind bowed stuff with the high spot up in the center, rather than the 2 ends.
Lay it on the chuck, and shim it.
Paper, shim stock, whatever you have, work as shims...
Grind it flat, lightly, then flip it and grind the other side flat.

Thanks guy's, i've got a local machine shop doing the grinding for me.my main concern is just keeping
uniform thickness and removing about .007" from each side. after that the bow will be a pile of dust
on my floor :)

I say go for the temper straightening process. I use it to align all my bevel grinding clamps and works like a charm.
