Hi,

I’d like to get a SGA for my KMG.

I know of the Wuertz Machine Works and the Origin Blade Maker (OBM).

The OBM is less expensive than Travis’ version.

I’d like to ask people that have experience with them, which one should I get and to comment on the design, which one is better.

Thanks in advance,
Constantin

I have the OBM its great for the money. Travis no doubt invented the concept but there is a significant price difference. It is capable of holding decent tolerances. Highly recommended.

Gosh darn that Reeder SGA is a beast! Lot of thought went into that build.

Here is an updated video they put out on 1-30-20:

The ability to grind some bevels and fullers is pretty darn cool...

Does it include a sin bar, can you change the angle of the chuck for tapered tangs for example?

Thanks,

I watched some videos on their site and it seems to be the most feature rich attachment.

Has the compound sin bar capability, as you’ve mentioned.

I think Travis’ only allows for one sin movement, not two as the Reeder, please correct me of I’m wrong.

@Stacy E. Apelt - Bladesmith, how do you like your Reeder attachment?

Thanks,
Constantin

I do not think that is correct. If I am not mistaken, the sine bar for tapering is integrated and the sine bar for beveling goes under the mount. I think Travis shows it in one of his videos on youtube.

you asked which one is better. is it possible the less expensive one could be better ? i guess its possible. i do keep asking myself why the weurtz cost considerably more than other brands

I have the Reeder, have only used it once so far. I have their 2x72 as well. Everything I've bought from those guys has been great. What sold me on it was the adjustability and repeatability. I also knew it would work with with my grinder since they built both machines. I considered the OBM as well, but I figured I was buying a life-long tool and that the flexibility of the Reeder would be worth it in the long run. If you have any questions about it, I'm happy to try to answer them. I can't recommend Reeder Products machines enough, Don and Greg are good dudes and they put a lot of thought into their designs.

When I was looking into buying one, the less expensive copies seemed to have a huge difference in tolerance compared to the Wuertz. Probably not noticeable in a tapered tang, but I’m sure very noticeable in something like a folder. I was hoping that by me purchasing one I would eliminate the need for my stand alone surface grinder. I’ve had 3 neck surgeries and looking down while rotating a table back and forth and side to side really agitates my neck. It’s made the stand alone surface grinder really unpleasant.
If the attachment did as good of a job I was going to get rid of the stand alone.
Unfortunately I don’t think it does. That’s not saying it won’t get the job done, it’s just the difference in the two are pretty far apart.
I will say, the Wuertz sga is a really great tool for quickly removing scale and tapering tangs. I’d say they’re great if you wanted to taper 20 tangs in a batch and just set the table up once. Although anyone that’s tapered quite a few tangs knows it’s not a very difficult job and could arguably be done by hand faster than a table.

I wonder how Wuertz stands against the Reeder.

And man, the OBM is almost half the price.

The OBM tolerance didn’t seem good enough to me. The reeder price was pretty close to the Wuertz isn’t it? I’ll be honest though, when it came down to the reeder and the Wuertz, it came down to Travis’s reputation.
Well, that and I found a good deal on a used one. Lol I know I may not be helping you much, I talked to Travis for a while on the phone and he was a great guy, didn’t try to sell me on anything, just answered all my questions. Give them both a call, have them answer your questions. You probably won’t go wrong either way.
