Surface grinder belts?

Converted the surface grinder to use 2 x 72 belts instead of wheels recently. The 50 grit hoggers I like work great w/ it. I do not like the new 3M alligator belts on it. You guys that use belts on your surface grinders which ones do you like (especially for a good finish) and why?

Take a look at the grinder on the shop tour page if you want.

Cool Shop! Whose wheels did you use for the conversion? Is the unigrinder homemade or is a brand? Thanks. John Lloyd

Bill-

The gators do not work well on the conversion.

I use the 60 and 120 Norton ceramic hoggers.

Then bump up to the Norax (the ones that look kind'a like corduroy) in the ~320X. I can't remember the number off the top of my head A45 or something like that.

:D

John I got the wheels from Bertie Rietveld in S. Africa. He is the only one that makes the wheels w/ enough density (hardness) that we have found. The conversion is a shameless clone of Nick Wheelers.
The Unigrinder is home built from a set of plans I bought. It works really well but I use it mainly for heavy hogging (profiling etc.) and the KMG for flat grinds.
Thanks Nick - anyone else using belts?

Yep, Bill, I use belts! They hold up my pants! Missed you at Blade this year, missed Nick too! ---Sandy---

Bill, I also use the Norax belts for finishing on Bertie's wheels. I pretty much do it the same way Nick does. Depending on the need, I will go up to 600 or 1200 grit Norax for a nice polish. The nice thing about the Norax belts is that you do not get the "slap" from the butt splice that comes from some other belts when used on the conversion. Their thickness and softness makes them run smooth and creates a very nice finish.

Fox reminded me! I haven't tried the real fine belt yet, but have a couple of the ~320 Norax that are REALLY worn, and (IMO) are comparable to a 600x belt.

With light passes and a nice slow pass over the steel (at the last couple passes) you can get an extremely fine and consistent finish.

Hey Bill, weren't you pay'n attention when you were here? You get an F!

Well, maybe an F+

You barely squeaked by! ;)

:D :p :D

Hey that ain't the first "F" I ever got Nick! The more I use the new set up the more I like it. It is sure nice to clean up damascus that easy and being able to start off w/ something that is flatter than Nicks feet.
