well my surface grinder came a couple days ago, and I'm still on the rig.

Well, it'll be waiting on me when I get to the house. My question is what kind of magnetic chuck to get? Electric or manual? I'll be converting to belt first chance I get, and it'll be used to clean up damascus and forged billets as much or more than fine folder work.

Hi Will,
I've had a manual surface grinder for a number of years. Does make life simpler to get good flat same thickness parts.
A manual chuck works just fine....I still use the one that came with the grinder.
The only thing I would change, if spending several hundred $'s was OK would to replace the existing chuck with a fine pole chuck....I do alot of slipjoints springs and blades and the "closer together" bands of magnets would be a bit better holder of the steel. Current chuck isn't a problem, especially with larger than slipjoint size parts. Just that fine pole would be even better....
Also, a 1/16" thich plate that is the width of the chuck and an inch or two wide is a good idea on the left side of the chucks magnets just to have the parts butt up against...just a bit stronger holding.
Enjoy your new "toy".
