Surface Grinder

I have noticed in Blade and KI that a lot of makers adapt their surface grinders to 2" x 72" belts. What is the advantage? It seems to me that using a rubber contact wheel would be defeating the purpose, by giving as it comes off the part. I'm not critizing, just curious.

It realy depends on what the grinder is going to be used for. A contact wheel setup is not going to work for grinding shoulders or slots, etc. It will work great for removing scale and flattening bladestock and tapering tangs. It also workd MUCH better for grinding Ti. If one is properly modified to run the belt and contact wheel, it should be easy enough remove and use a stone wheel.

the belt set up allows you to grind a varitey of materials such as handle materials, which would load up the grinding wheel possibly causing the grinding wheel to explode, it also allows the maker to have a large selection of grit finishes at a fraction of the cost of wheels, belts run much cooler too.
