Surface Grinder

I have a chance to buy a Brown and Sharp 6x18 manual surface grinder complete with permanent magnet chuck and a box of wheels. It is listed for $750.00, but I will offer less in cash. Since its only about 60 miles from my house, I can pick it up. The only downside is it is 3 phase. I have a VFD on my KMG, so could probably use that. In the pics it looks good, was taken out of a working machine shop.
Since I started making folders, I found out how hard it is to get 2 flat and parallel sides.
The questions are: Anybody have anything to look for when I go see it? Any downside other than the 3 phase?

chip, have them start it up and let the spindle warm up. make sure no weird nosies are coming off the spindle. put on a wheel, dress it and make a cut on a piece of steel. check the finish. make sure it is flat and clean looking. move table to the end of the stroke. with your finger,feel the ways, making sure they aren't any ware grooves in them. there should be a light film of oil there also...............jake
 
I've got a very similar machine in a K O Lee, with a 6x18 ceramax chuck on it.
Mine was also 3 phase and I put a 110 single phase on it (I make mostly folders) that
was 8 years ago---0 problems and never looked back.

3 phase is not a "drawback". A 3Ph motor is inherently smoother-running than a single-phase, which on a surface grinder is a significant benefit.

Another VFD to power it would only run about $200 to $300.

Almost all surface grinders I have ever seen are three phase. SO dont worry about that aspect of it, Just throw a phase converter or a VFD on it and call it good.
That sounds like a fair price considering it comes with a magnetic chuck.
Attempt to get a diamond dresser with it and as many wheels as he is willing to part with if you go pick it up.
