surface grinding of the lockbar: does it affect the heattreatment?

I recently bought 2 new large lefthanded sebenza's .
While admiring the perfect fit and finish i noticed that the lockface of the lockbar is grinded supersmooth!
But it seems to be done after heat treatment of the lockbar .
Does this affect the heat treatment in any way?

kind regards dirk

The lockbars are cut out at the same time as the handle slabs on a CNC, then heat treated/carbodized after being bent into position. The blades are then ground to fit the handle. So there is no grinding done on the lock bar after the heat treating. The blades are fit to the handles by being carefully hand ground at the tang to achieve the proper lockup.

Yes that is what i saw on the shoptour too !
But than the lockface would have a dark colour;the heat treatment causes the titanium to change color (still visible around the detent area as a dark colour)
But the lockface is shiny and has a light colour ,so can only be done after the heat tratment I think : the coloration is grinded off?!

kind regards

The color might lighten after some use as the blade tang and the lockbar are "polished" with use.

Could you post pictures? I am curious to see what you are seeing and would help to understand your description better.

Oké ,here we go!

a bit of coloration around the detent (if I remember correctly this was darker with het old sebenza's)

a few tiny marks on the edge of the lockface where it rubs against the bladeramp:

and here the relavively clean and shiny surface of the lockface.

Chris did change something heat treating the new sebenza's compared to the old one's
I am just curious and seriously interested in the technique behind the best factory folder on the market:)

kind regards,
dirk

The triangle shaped area is where the detent ball and the heat treated area are taped off before being blasted. You need to watch the older shop video, the one from 2006. It shows the whole heat treat and detent process:)

I understand why there is the triangle shape and that tape is applied before beatblasting!
I'v seen the dvd numerous times (it is one of my favorits) the heat treatment with a torch is done after surface grinding the lockface and before pressing the ceramic detent ball.
I know how to heat treat the lockbar and carbidise it (i am a knifemaker myself) but still my question remains unanswered !
I still am getting a lot of answers but not one yet answers my question:
Why is the surface of the lockaface not dark coloured?
What is done different from the early sebenza's
Let me refrace my question:

Heat treatment of the lockbar of my new sebenza seems to be done BEFORE surfacegrinding of the lockface.
Is this correct?
And if not: why is this grinding surface not coloured from heat treatment?

kind regards,

dirk

Dirk,

I think the best way to get answers to your questions are to contact CRK and reference the link to this thread.

All indications are that there is no surface grinding or "facing" of the lockbar after the HT. Sorry our answers are not sufficient. As stated above I suggest you direct your concerns to Heather @ CRK.

Good idea guys:thumbup:
I have sent Chris Reeve knives an email about this subject!

thanks!

Just got a reply from Heather:
They are using a different technique for heat treating the lock that leaves a cleaner finish !

Mistery solved:thumbup:
So the order of things is still the same ; grinding first and heat treatment later , but less visible .
Chris is still improving his knives on even the smallest details:)
Thank you Heather!
