Surface Grinding

I rescently purchased a batch of 5160 that is quite rusted. Not quite new 36 grit belts barely do any good. To save myself some work (and maybe money) I have been considering taking it somewhere and getting it surface ground. Has anyone done this? How much should I expect to pay?

Anyone know who to call in the San Antonio, Tx area?

Sounds like you need to anneal the 5160 if your belt is not cutting. Bring it up to non-magnetic in a forge and slow cool it.

It is annealed. I have about 20 feet of 1/4" x 2.5". My problem is that the surface has been pitted by rust. What I am considering is having it surface ground past the "rusty/pitted" area. I am curious about the cost and whether it would be cheaper that what it cost me in 36 grit Norton belts.

quite frankly...you do NOT want it surface ground....a surface grinder takes very small amounts of metal off...even a big automatic one would take hours getting to the bottom of the pits...at about $80 per hour...or more. what you want to find is someone with a blanchard grinder.....much different..much coarser and hogs off material.....call a few machine shops (the big ones) in your area.

for the price of 5160 it would cheaper to throw it away an buy new steel

Side grinder, with a Norzon rock might be an option.

I found a guy locally that has a blanchard grinder. His "grinding table" is 36" in diameter. I just need to figure out how I want to cut up my steel to avoid waste later.

He charges $50 for as much as I can fit. I want him to take off a little less than 1/32" on each side, leaving my original thickness of a full 1/4" a little closer to 3/16" which is what I want. If my "arithmatic" is correct, I can get about 20' done for the $50. This works out to about $2.50 per running foot. I'll give it a try on this batch. At that price though, I could of course just buy new 5160 as Tom suggested.
