surface grinding

Actually that's a pretty normal shop rate cheaper than some I have seen. That's why it pays to buy precision ground steel in the first place unless you have your own surface grinder.Dave:)

I live in Phoenix Az, you helped me with that watermelon knife I made last year, the piece is 9.3x2x.154" S90v that I wanted taken down to .0625", the guy quoted me at least six hours at 55$ an hour

that sounds like a job for a face mill.

I agree with DC Knives. Save that piece for something else and buy a piece in the size you need. I have some 1/8" BG42 that would work great for what you want. Want to trade?

Did you finish the watermelon knife? Last I heard you were going to send it back to me for cleanup and I never heard from you again.

I got motivated looking at the wallet knife thread and decided to come up with a design of my own. The watermelon knife I ended up finishing myself as I wasn't sure I'd have enough time to get it to my grandma by her birthday. It turned out pretty good though. I was looking for somewhere that supplied 1/16" S90V in the size I needed but that size from AKS was the closest I could find. I'm sorry I never got back to you on it, I guess I got caught up in other stuff. Thanks for all your help on it though!

That's a lot of material to remove by surface grinding. You should probably blanchard or double-disc grind that.--Probably be within the $75 min. charge.

There's a good local place I've discovered that's both very good, fast and inexpensive. Very rare combination (I looked nationwide for weeks and was happy to discover this outfit in the next town over.)

Try:
Bourdelais Grinding

I didnt know there was a difference between blanchard and surface grinding, the quote I got was for blanchard grinding

They're jerking your chain quoting you 5 hours!
Check out Bourdelais and see what they say (Scott or Brian) ... they're west-coast so you can get them now. Should be minimum order $75. (If you have more pieces, you could probably have a lot of them done for the same min. order.

Thanks for the link, I just called them and yes it'd be 75$. I'll definitely go there if I cant figure anything else out. I do have access to a mill at school, but some little hooligan decided to steal the vice so we're trying to get the district to get a new one. we've been waiting since mid last year :jerkit:

Blanchard grinding will remove material a lot faster than surface grinding. Surface grinding will give you a much finer finish. Taking .154 down to .0625 on a SG is wasting over half the material. You might also consider that the desirable property of S90V is that it gets really hard and holds an edge forever, however, it tends to be prone to chipping. At .0625 I'd be concerned about fracturing the blade with any lateral stress.

BTW Michael, I don't think I want to trade but thanks for the offer, I kinda want to find out what this steels like. Also I've always loved your carbon fiber MOP combo in your gallery and will be requesting one as soon as I get some money

The way to go would be to do a bunch of this (or similar) at once. Essentially anything else that will fit into that min. order is free.

Hey neighbor! Still have to get out and see your digs!

The grinder I referenced is off LA Ave. near Sterns Rd. I've used them to square up material for precision fixtures (not to mention blanks for knife parts). They were substantially cheaper and faster than anyone I quoted, local and nationally. (3 days vs. 3 weeks, etc).

Does S90V have the oft-mentioned chipping thing? I thought that was something specific to S30V, but I could be wrong. ???

I've read about the chipping problem, I was hopeing to minimize that by only using this knife for veeeery delicate cutting.
