Have anyone experrimented with some of the industrial surface treatments, like TiAlNi, i really like the gold color.

Or what about the GLOCK, tennifer finish instead of BT2, wich in my oppinion is too soft.

Thank You.

I have had some knives coated with TiN, the gold coloured coating. What I elected to do was to prefit the handle scales but not epoxy them in place to avoid scratching the coating during sanding of the scales. I then mirror polished the heat treated blade, sharpened it to a razor edge, and etched my name on the blade. It seems like a lot of work before the coating goes on but it was worth it.

The coated blade is now TiN coated on both sides of the cutting edge and should stay that way for some time. When the time comes to sharpen the blade the owner will sharpen one side of the blade only thus leaving the very hard coating on the opposite edge to become the cutting edge. If all goes well the 440C blade at Rc56-58 will wear away first thus creating a self sharpening knife.
At least that is the way that Buck explains the theory behind sharpening only one side of the blade, only time will tell.

There are several other types of Ti coatings, some going into the 90 Rockwell range but apparently only the gold is approved for food service.

George,

Where did you get your knife coated at?

Can someone please post or email me some contact info for various types of coatings? Thanks!
