Is a fly cutter the tool to roughly grind to thickness before surface grinding? If not ....what is? What size fly cutter is recommended? I have R8 collets.
How big is the fly cutter and what mill do you have? There's no reason that you couldn't fly cut a piece before surface grinding. However, flycutters can be hard on your spindle bearings and many precision machinists have no use for them and prefer a face mill that keeps a couple teeth in the cut at all times making for a smoother finish and less wear on your machine.
they sell dirt cheap face milling heads , aka indexable end mills (NOT Lovejoy) that take 3-5 carbide inserts. Thiis is much better and smoother cut. Inserts are 3-angle and you just flip them as wear off.
