When new, how much wobble or play is there in the Surge when closed? I just bought one and there appears to be about 2 - 3mm of play when close. The tool tightens up when opened. I'm guessing this is normal to allow the tool to close more easily. Any thoughts...

I don't have a surge, but I have it's almost identical little brother, the Wave, and it also has that wobble when closed, and it also tightens up when open. Might be the way they are made. If you look at the closed tool, up behind the pliers head, you'll notice a strip that widens as it goes towards the center. It does it on both sides. That is what makes the handles tighten up as you are opening them up. The fact that the handles are at the thinnest part when closed might have somethng to do with this, I'm guessing.

I see what your talking about, pertty sure it is be design to. Thank you for your reply.

I have to agree, I've carried the Surge now (in rotation with my Wave) for about 6 mos. and I've noticed the same thing. And my brother now EDC's the same LM and he's noticed that too.

It's a design characteristic. One of those little quirks. No worries.

I have a brand new surge that I got about a month ago, and there is very very little slop or wobble when closed. If you're getting 2-3 mm I'd take it back and get a new one.
