You know, for the longest time I was sort of back and forth on the Surge. My wife bought one for me as a wedding present back in '05, and I have carried it off and on. The big thing for me not wanting to pack it is...well, it's a Big Thing with all the bits and blades, etc.
Just the other day, I got down to thinking about it. It has all the locking tools I want with one hand tools. However, how much do I use the extra bits on a gotta-have-it-now basis? How often I really need a file?
From that, I just took the file out of the equation and stashed it some place close where I can find it if I need it. I also packed away the bits and just left a double ended philips in there since I had a good flat driver made into the tool. I cobbled together a leather friction sheath, and now I have a tool that rides better with less pieces to lose.
I work in the swimming pool industry, so in the off season I can get away with a ByrdRench for EDC chores. However, once the pieces, parts, and doo-dads of work start to roll in, I'll need the beef and pliers of the Surge or something comparable.
