Surge Vs Wave

Do you want a regular or supersized multi-tool? What features are important to you?

The Wave can be pocket carried with an (optional) clip.

The Surge has larger pliers, larger scissors, an awl, and a blade exchanger.

Leatherman currently has a $10 manufacturer rebate on the Surge.

I have both. (old wave & Surge).

I tend to EDC the Surge more due to the demands of the job at times, I find myself reassured by the robustness of the tool. A word you will find often associated with this MT. And that about sums it up, it will really depend on what you need it for-everyday.

If you use it fairly rarely, then you'll probably prefer the wave. But if you like having a big tank of an MT, and have no qualms about lugging the considerably heavier older brother, then the Surge is for you.

You know, for the longest time I was sort of back and forth on the Surge. My wife bought one for me as a wedding present back in '05, and I have carried it off and on. The big thing for me not wanting to pack it is...well, it's a Big Thing with all the bits and blades, etc.

Just the other day, I got down to thinking about it. It has all the locking tools I want with one hand tools. However, how much do I use the extra bits on a gotta-have-it-now basis? How often I really need a file?

From that, I just took the file out of the equation and stashed it some place close where I can find it if I need it. I also packed away the bits and just left a double ended philips in there since I had a good flat driver made into the tool. I cobbled together a leather friction sheath, and now I have a tool that rides better with less pieces to lose.

I work in the swimming pool industry, so in the off season I can get away with a ByrdRench for EDC chores. However, once the pieces, parts, and doo-dads of work start to roll in, I'll need the beef and pliers of the Surge or something comparable.

Does someone know the difference in length between the clip point blades (wave vs. Surge)? Can someone possibly take a pic of both blades side by side?
