surgical steel?

What is the 'surgical steel' that Jaguar and so many other companies make their knives out of? I've seen Jaguars advertised as being everything from 420 to 440C, but they're all the same thing as far as I can tell.. I'm guessing it's 420 - because that's embarassing enough to be worth covering up with a different name.. It's a bad marketing ploy anyway, because aren't surgical instruments used once, then trashed?

Does anyone know for sure what type of steel Bear's balis are made of?

Also, I plan on making a custom bali or 2 soon.. Is it possible to get some decent bar stock on the internet?

(yes my blood) - it is just a marketing ploy for 420. Though the thought of 'surgeryfying' someone with a Jag.. hnnn.

I am not sure with the Bears actually. I thinkthey have been advertised as 440A then there's the lower end damascus. COrrect me on that cause I am too lazy to check my records and it's late and I am getting old.

Often a non-specific description such as "Surgical Steel" coming from Asian sources is simply a way that they can use whatever steel they could get a good deal on that day. This way, they don't have to make separate dies to mark the different alloys and they don't have to explain to customers why their steel is inconsistent.

Actually, as far as I know, the idea of real "surgical steel" is to have an alloy that is best suited for medical purposes, so it shouldn´t produce any negative body reactions (allergies due to nickel content for example). I don´t think those alloys would be especially suitable for knife blades.

...I heard somewhere that surgical steel is just the Asian term for stainless steel...i think jags are probably all 420 stainless, except the name is different

anyone know more on this? correct me if i'm wrong

I don't think so.. the sweet asian cleavers I have say Stainless on them, so I don't think that is the case. (Surgical= stainless). I guess Sir Gollnick's reply seems more feasible. I don't think Asians are worried about 'misinforming' their clients as much as using 'surgical steel' as a marketing ploy.
