Has anyone ever used one of the many military surplus tents on the market? The shelter sections (Zeltbahns) look real nice. Are they really practical or just nice to look at? Any feedback would be appreciated.

They make a nice HQ set up where you are close to your car. Some of the surplus tents (I think you are talking about canvas military surplus) are pretty roomy, but they are very very heavy.

matthew rapaport understates! They are very, very, very heavy!

One assignment during my 23 year Army career was to support the reduction in weight and cube of certain Army equipment. It never seemed to get lighter, it seemed to get heavier with the claim that it was more capable! Try carrying "capability" in the field. The M9 bayonet is an example. The M7 and a good personally procured combat knife is lighter than the M9, and as, or more capable.

I agree about the shelter sections being very heavy. What would recomend that is as roomy but lighter.
