I was poking around in the local rural supply store this morning and came across a nice wooden case with a glass front on it. It contained about a dozen different Schrade folding knives. I'd never noticed it before, an interesting find.

There was this nice 3 blade job there that I think I'll go back and have a closer look at, can't remember what it was called.

I think it was probably THIS ONE.

Would this be a worthwhile knife to add to my collection?

(Yes, I know the company has sadly gone out of business.) :(

I don't even have to click the link: ANY Old Timer is worth getting!! Not only are they American classics, but damn fine "using" knives. Not pretty (unless, like me, you find saw-cut Delrin irresistable), but as functional a slipjoint as was ever made.

To me, the 34OT is the Old Timer knife. Don't pay too much though, Smoky Mountain Knife Works still has the 34OT for $15 or so.

I've picked up a bunch of Old Timers since New Years. Some for keeping, some for giving away, and some for trading later.

Best Wishes,
Bob

If it is about 3 1/4 inches closed with short nail nick on the main blade it is a 34OT Middleman, if it is about 3 7/8 inches closed with long nail nick on the main blade it is an 8OT Rancher, if it is from before the late 90's or so it is made of 1095 carbon steel, if it is newer it may be 420HC stainless. Great knives as are all Schrade Old Timers (actually all Schrades) IMHO.

Ask the guy if he'll sell the display case with the leftover knives, be worth the price.

Has he got 8-OT Senior Stockman or any Sharpfingers?
Don't know, I just saw this case when I was in there on Sat. getting some fencing materials. Didn't have time to really examine them. I'm going back in this coming Sat. and have a better look. I'll let you know what I find.
