Surprise or Disappointment

What is everyones biggest surprise/disappointment with Spyderco knives? I don't mean quality wise but having lusted after a particular model which one has not met expectations and which has exceeded them. For me the best was the Shabaria which in my eyes is as beautiful as it is practical. Whereas the Gunting no longer graces my pocket as it is bulky, overly complex in usage and plain doesn't fit it!

The Endura(FRN). I love that knive!!!! What is disappointing is that no matter what other spydie I "stray to", I alway go back to The always faithful Endura!! Even with the knife is better!!!

Go figure??????:(

My biggest disappointment was the Goddard lightweight. I loved the design and lines on that knife. The blade shape really appealed to me. But when I finally ordered one via the web, it arrived and was just too darn big for me. Luckily, I found a willing swapper here on the forum and got myself a plain-edged Endura instead. I love it.

I guess my biggest surprise with Spydies (I've only had two for any length of time, the Endura and a 50/50 Delica) is how light and comfortable to carry they are and, at the same time, how TOUGH they are!

Didn't care for a Copilot I picked up, it just didn't feel right in my hand and it was heavy, but my first Spydie, an Endura that I've had for over 10 years, still impresses me :)

My biggest disapointment was with the ATS-55 steel. I sure wish Spyderco would let me swap the blades for VG-10 versions. I bought the knives thinking they were high performance steels, the word rust is not even close:( They hold a good edge though and are quite tough. Just that darn rust! Worse than plain jane carbon steel!

Pity as otherwise I love my Spydies!:D

Starmate (plain edge, of course). Picked one up, kind of for the heck of it, since I was a gun show, hadn't found anything (but my wife had  ), and I knew they'd been discontinued. The Starmate has quickly become one of my favorite knives, right up there with the customs I own.

The only disappointment I have ever had with Spyderco didn't have anything to do with the fit and finish of a knife. It was when they discontinued the Wegner. :(

Surprises - generally only good ones, like how big, sturdy and well manufactured models like the Lum Titanium Tanto Folder are.

Disappointments - only one - When I discovered that my new FRN Native had made it out of the factory without the final bevel being ground. Just a flat edge where the sharp one was supposed to be! A quick trip to Mike in Spyderco Warranty and Repair took care of that problem!!

I'm fairly new to Spyderco knives--my second spydie is the Bob Lum tanto/G10, I love it!! :)--and the one commonality with most of their knives that has disappointed me is the inability to disassemble them (non-destructively that is). Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Biggest disappointment - that the plastic-clipped original Endura was discontinued.

I was thoroughly surprised by the quality of my small Calypso, micarta handle, plain edge. With the flat grind, that thing is a pure cutting machine. Unfortunately, it was eclipsed by the Wegner Jr. then finally by a small Sebenza. I was just thinking that it might make a good gen purpose blade to have with me in my tool kit when mountain biking.

No disappointments, though there have been knives that I did not care for.

I find the thing about Spyderco that can be a little frustrating is the level to which they challenge the consumer, but by the same token, that is probably what keeps me coming back.

And the thumb hole. Oh, baby, the hole.....

Oh hole, how I love thee.
Round and Round, how I love thee.

Like a Barry White song.....

Smooth, efficient and oh so good.

Like Barry White himself.....

Kinda chenky, but it gets the job done.

My greatest satisfaction, so far, with Spyderco has been Innovation.

They found another lock, and it is a good one. It will probably take me awhile to get it into the muscle memory, but, oh well. And as a great bonus, the dreaded liner.lock.access.cut.that.drives.me.nuts is gone. I absolutely hated the way the access cut bothered my index finger, I would probably still have a Military if it did not have that. And, boy oh boy, I am so hoping that they convert the Military to the Compression Lock.

And I am so enthused by the descriptions I have heard about the new clip on the Temperance (which, by the way, is waiting for me at home).

Not being able to find a Police SS, PE with a clip for left hand carry at a fair price. Mostly have heard of over $150, would like to find one under $100 like the right handed version.

To many great things to name..The only disappointment for me was lusting after a Salsa just to find they are made in Tiawan.:barf:

Yeah I know the factory will be producing a quality knife or Sal wouldnt of chose it but I cant get past it..

Have to echo Capt. Howdy - my one gripe is not being able to dis-assemble some models.
My first Spidey was a Harpy, and is my day to day carry, purely for sentimental reasons. (Don't you always love the first one best?) But when I sit quietly in front of the TV manipulating it (click click click "will you put that bloody thing down!") I wish I could strip it to get every last bit of lint out.
This is getting awfully Freudian.

Love spydies, especially when they are designed to be lefty friendly!

Biggest disappointment has to be the Salsa. It looked cool, but the balde is awkward to do any real cutting with, as it is more than 1/2 the length in width. No reason that I can think of, other than to use more steel. In addition, the clip is difficult to reverse.

I'll keep it, as my son may be going to college in Boston, and need a sub 2 1/2" knife, but the SS Native sells for about the same price, and is a much better constructed knife, and ergonomically superior, IMHO.
