Surprised my brand new Sebenza 31 came dry

I just received a Small 31 with Magnacut dob 3/8/23 from a trusted dealer and everything about the knife was perfect. Great lock up with no flex, perfectly centered, and a nice edge. But the action was mega stiff and unpleasant. I have a well worn sebenza thumb and even I had trouble with opening it because it was so stiff. I took the blade out and was surprised how utterly dry it was. I honestly think they forgot to lubricate this one before mailing it out. Not a huge problem because I put a few dabs of fluorinated grease and now it's smooth as butter. Just an odd experience but thought I'd share.

The two I received recently, dated 02/28, don't seem particularly fluid, though I've taken neither apart. The Insingo considerably easier to manipulate out of the box than the tanto. The tanto after two weeks is about where the Insingo was upon its first openings.

I love 'em anyway.

Yesterday I pulled a brand new Large Inkosi from a box. B-Day 3-3-23. Wasn’t exactly dry but pretty close.

Maybe they're using a different lube or process during assembly? (Something along the lines of a dry lube?)

I would think that unlikely except there have been a lot of comments about them arriving dry lately 🤔

I have not had this experience recently, but I had a plain L31 about a year ago with no grease in the pivot. As stated above, it's an easy fix. My best guess is that they have a minimalist approach to pivot lube and sometimes it goes a little to far. I also love em anyway. Good excuse for a tear down and clean up.
