Here's an article on DNA analysis of supposed yeti artifacts.

It doesn't mention how the samples compare to bears known to inhabit the region.

Cool. Many years ago Reinhold Messner (some famous mountain climbing guy) said Yetis are some kind of bears. However as everything he was overselling it too much and that's why nobody believed him.

I have a big foot, actually two of them. Both are exactly 1 foot long.

According to the linked article, Messner found an old Tibetan manuscript claiming they were bears.

Neato. The kinda funny part is that if true folks don't seem to be surprised at ursa yet would be at primate.

:)

You are right. I would have thought a bear more likely than a primate. But now since you mention it I couldn't give you a good reason why :)
If you think about it, a primate with more brain power, than a bear, could hide much more successfull if he was inclined to do so.

I've always assumed it's a matter of habitat. Bears can live in regions that freeze all winter because they hibernate, except polar bears which don't need to hibernate because of their unique coat and other adaptations. I doubt that any large primates could survive in those environments. Despite their name, "mountain" gorillas don't live in freezing climates and can't hibernate.

Also, bears are very intelligent and quite good at hiding when they want to. It's just that they don't have much to hide from except humans and bigger bears.

If you got a really good look at a primate yeti, you'd make a big deal of it. If you see a bear in the mountains or the Pacific NorthWest, you'd shrug and say "bear" -- but the next guy might yell "SASQUATSCH". In that sense, a bear hides in plain sight -- until a yeti-hunter sees what he wants to see.

three part mini-series on tv here about a man in the US doing DNA tests, 1st on samples of yeti hair frrom all along the himalayans, match hybrid* polar bears. mentioned NOT similar to local brown or moon bears. 2nd on sasquatch in pacific NW, 7 samples from most creditable sources including the man who says he shot one. matched to canines (wolves &/or dogs), horses, black bear, squirrel and a raccoon. next show will be on the european & russian equivalent to sasquatch.

*there was an interesting show last year about how polar bears in no. canada and USA were interbreeding with brown bears (grizzlys).

I've read about that. Apparently some polar bears are entering brown bear habitat because melting arctic ice deprives them of the hunting grounds in which they evolved. One of the problems they face is that finding food in the brown bear environment is not entirely instinctual, but is passed on from mother to cubs. The polar bears don't have that learned knowledge and have trouble surviving in the new environment. They're looking for seals to hunt, not salmon or grubs, grass and moose calves. However, they learn fast, given half a chance.

Not that this has much to do with yetis, but I find bears more interesting than yetis. And more interesting than some people. Present company excluded, of course.

Polar bears evolved from brown bears (grizzlies) maybe 40,000 years ago. They've probably been interbreeding along their common frontier since then.

I've always held out hope for the Yeti/Sasquatch/Skunk Ape...etc that senses us coming way off and hides. :)
Mayhaps they have these nocturnal ancient bears as pals and they send them out to take the hit when we get too close.

I read an article like that last week... It seems to me that there has to be some truth to the legend as there are stories of a giant ape-like creature found in just about every facet of human civilization

Most ancient religions have some kind of thunder god.
Don't take anything for real only because lots of people believe in it.
Some is just extrapolating what they see in real live. Lizards are real. Big as a house lizards (dragons) not (anymore).
Giant spiders, apes. Same with mixed creatures. Not so hard to imagine kind of seemed probable and then it's always better to be save than sorry and having a few silver bullets couldn't harm just in case there is something to werewolfs and minitours.

That Thera is pretty funny, Esav, the last time I had a salad I had parmesano Cretins on it! :)
