Surprising BM Axis AFCK Observations

I just received a new BM 806D2 Axis AFCK. I was very suprised to see that the bushings are bronze, rather than the usual teflon (which I have no problem with). Also, the scales were drilled and tapped for tip-up or tip-down carry both left and right sides. Yes, drilled and tapped in 4 different spots!

This knife is not listed on the box or knife as a "special edition". It appears to be a normal production run.

Has this become the new norm for BM? If so--:D :D

This has become the norm for Benchmade. It is my understanding that they are phasing in the bronze washers. I also like the swiss cheese effect. It is nice to have that many carry options. Benchmade is on the right track.

After reading your post I have inspected my 806D2 Axis AFCK more carefully than I did it before and noticed that it also has metal bushing. Probably not brass because they have the same color as liners but certainly it is not teflon.

As to clip tip-down position – it would be nice but doesn’t the clip cover lock operating button in this position?
Could you show your knife, please.

I love my 806, but would love to have it with those upgrades. It is slick already and doesn't need the new washers, IMO. The carry options are always a plus though. Oh well, guess thats the price you pay for getting something brand new.

Mine is left or right and either tip up or tip up. Fine by me so long as those little springs keep the blade shut in my poscket.

Serg--Sorry I have no digicam capabilities right now, but the pre-drilled/tapped clip holes are completely clear of the Axis lock. It is no problem and it allows just about any type of carry situation. See Dennis' post above. It looks as though BM has really "stepped up to the plate". (I wish the Mets could:eek:  ).

Earlier today I emailed Benchmade, and Angie kindly answered back. I asked if the phosphorus/bronze washers were interchageable with the nylon washers, and she says they are; that if there is ever a problem with a BM knife's nylon washers it should be no problem to replace with bronze washers. To be fair, up to now I have had no washer problems with my nylon-washered BM's, but it's good that if there ever is, that they can be upgraded.

BM is definitely on the right track. It's great to see these top-quality manufacturers constantly upgrading their products. I don't yet have a bronze-washered knife (a knife nut I know picked up a 555 I "influenced" him to buy, and his had the bronze washers). Looking forward to when they are all like that. :)

I’m just curious what material is used for washers on my Axis AFCK. Perhaps some day I’ll take it apart to check it but I should to have some additional free time to put it together and now I don’t have it.
Benchmade is on the right track
In my honest opinion they always were. Evaluating each knife I always try to consider what I could improve to get it closer to my ideal knife idea. Dealing with BM I usually have minimal space for my improvements if at all...

I have additionally inspected washers on my 551 Griptilian and considered they also look like metal but certainly not bronze.
Any ideas what it is?

I’ll try to contact Travis in this matter...

The new washers are superb. I got a new Mini Griptilian the other day with the new bronze washers ($41 on Ebay!). It is honestly every bit as smooth as my Sebenzas. It seems like the are larger in diameter than other older nylon pivot washers on my other Benchmades.
Hurrah Benchmade! Way to go Les!
