What's the edge thickness of your < 4" blades?

In other words, hunters, skinners, pocket knives, etc.

Before heat treat?
The final using edge?
Hollow grind?
Flat grind?
Chisel grind?
Saber grind?
Convex grind?

It's not that simple after all, is it. ;)

Tee Hee Hee,

Final using edge, regardless of grind. In other words if I bought a knife from you, and measured the blade right about where the edge starts how thick is it?

I know there's a million combinations. And if it's a moran edge how can I see where it starts, yaddity, yaddity. Also you might make your hollow grinds thicker than your flats. But just average it out.

My interest is because production knives (regardless of grind) seem to have very thick edges - on average - compared to custom jobs - or is it me?

Nordic knives and Japanese swords would be zero since there is no secondary edge.

Steve, I voted on the 6 to 12 thousandths but sometimes my edges, and I presume you mean before heat treating, do go greater than 12 mil..

Roger,

>> I presume you mean before heat treating

Nope sorry, I should have been more specific. Final, finished product, edge. (Hey Buddy, you're always so focused on heat treating! ;) ;) )

It used to be I'd get it down to 10-15 thou and put the secondary bevel on it. Now I take it to 10-15 and put a moran edge on em. My neck knives usually have no secondary bevel.

I only do full flat grinds.

Interesting.

So we have 2 nordic types that take it all the primary bevel all the way to the cutting edge.

Then 50/50 on thin vs. thick.

Interesting, but no one (at this point) has edges over .024"! And yet that's where many factory blades are.

.025-to no more than .030 Hollow ground here .:)
edited to add..
ooooops 4" yeah less that .025 but not always, it depends
on what you want when you order..also...:)

What's 1/64th"? That's about what they are before I put an edge on em; most of my knives have about 6" blade, full flat grind. I've never mic'ed anything...

Steve, after finished and ready for the edge honing I'd say 8 to 20 mil from knife to knife, and all my blades to date have been hunter length and shorter and all have been flat grinds.
