OK maybe not survival but what BBQ's do you guys use for car camping? Before some smart-ass suggests a fire please note that we have a very dry high fire season so we can't grill on an open fire but bbq's are allowed.

I've used the cheap $20 portable all the way up to the coleman propane Roadtrip LXE and the cheap one seems to cook better and last longer.

What portable bbq's I mean "survival grills" do you guys use and what do you recommend? BBQ knife and bbq guns are allowed in this thread if you post pictures :-)

we use a single burner camp stove that has disosable gas fuel canisters ( gas as in liquid petrolium gas not gas like americans stick in their fuel tanks :P )

I have a stainless steel collander with a wire grill that fits on top as well
a handful of charcoal brick barbeque fuel things in it , and its got heat enough to boil the billy , cook steaks , whatever for a couple hours at least

the shape of the collander reflects the heat upwards , means you get to use more of what you produce
what you see there cooked 2 pan fuls of sausages and kept the kettle simmering for an hour or more.

usualy we use this collander thing for when we are cooing where we want a fire but rules and regs say we cant have open fire .. its our compromise .

I have an emberlit I carry in my pack if Im walking or driving , my little girl particularly loves it because it chars her marshmellows just perfect .
I like it , it uses way little fuel for the heat it puts out , it packs down small , easy to se etc .

Depending on how many of us there are to feed and what kind of mood we are in , how wet / dry the surrounds around us are etc we use any or a combination of all of these , as well as a regular open fire ... actually the open fire is our favorite way of cooking , but most places we go , the heat and dryness of the place means we dont use it as much as we would like

If you can have a fire in a enclosed portable BBQ the Lodge Logic Sportsman Grill is about the coolest portable cast iron grill I have ever seen. I love cast iron if it is for car camping.

If you can use charcoal, the Weber Smokey Joe Gold is small with a top that clips on to avoid ashes spilling all over your car. Its pretty cheap.

Think I'm going to steal this idea when I head to the rockies later in the year ! What is in the middle between the briquettes ?
