I need your help.

I am a professor at Cy-Fair College in Houston TX and I am doing research on Survival (Non-Fiction and How-To) and I would like your suggestions.

I usually get on a topic and end up doing a lot of research on it to find the best books and resources to advise our library (both public and college) to purchase.

So - hit me with your picks for best:

Non Fiction Survival Tales (books like 'Into the Void', 'Adrift' and the like)

How To books (Books like the 'SAS Survival Handbook', Tom Brown's guides and the like)

I would also like one or two good books about selecting a good knife, sharpening, and maintaining a good knife or knives for Survival purposes (if you suggest other good books about making knives and other types of knives that would be fine too!)

Heck - hit me with your best fiction of Survival (books like 'White Fang' and the like.

Help me make this section of our library top notch!

(I will post this in the Survival Section as well - Thanks!)

One of the best survival books I've read is called "Deep Survival," by Laurence Gonzales. It's not really a "how to" type of book, but more of one that discusses various survival stories and the psycology (sp?) of them. Trys to answer the question of why some people live, while other, more experienced people die. Very interesting read, but not something you'd actually take in the woods with you. I also have a good knife book, although a friend of mine has it at the moment. I should get it back in a few days, I'll pass along the title then.

One I am currently reading is called Preparedness NOW [An Emergency Survival Guide for Civilians and Their Families] by: Anton Edwards.

I really like this book so far because its focus is survival in the urban environment. I live in the Los Angeles area so that is a plus for me. I also like it's additional focus on survival for families. And finally the chapter devoted to developing a an E-Kit and Go Bag is great.

I am still reading it but so far it is pretty good.

I hope this helps. :)

Titles:

"98.6," Lundin (endorsed by a who's who of survival and bushcraft)

"Survive Safely Anywhere, The SAS Survival Guide," Wiseman (Survival instructor to SAS for many years)

"How to Stay Alive in the Woods," Angier

The question of which knife is "best" for survival turns on the area of the world where it will be used. Beyond that, one might as well ask which wine (or beer) is "best."

Oh. I should point out that there is a Wilderness and Survival Forum here at BF.

When you think wilderness you got to learn to think natural.
Self reliance is not about buying all those new life saving gadgets but being able to fashioning things from scratch.
My vote goes to:
Primitive Wilderness Living & Survival Skills: Naked into the Wilderness by by John & Geri McPherson.
In this day and edge; there is still only one survival knife - and that's the SAK. Pack lite 'n easy, and then you will begin to treat the entire planet as HOME and not so dangerous a thing as meeting a stranger in the woods.

These are all good - many I have from lists other places - but the Urban suggestion is one I will need to check out.

KEEP 'EM COMING! Thanks!

Just finished up "One Man's Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey" -- not quite survival, but about a gentleman, Richard Proenneke, that gets frustrated with his dead-end job and decides to go live in the Alaskan wilderness. Sam Keith published excerpts from the man's journal after he passed away.

Quick read and definitely changed my perspective.
