Philosophically speaking The Bible is a great survival book. However, for good how-to survival stuff it is hard to beat the books by Lofty Wiseman (SAS Survival Manual), or Ragnar Benson (Living Off of the Land City and Country). I haven't had the priviledge of reading Mr. Davenport's book, but I'm sure it is informative as well. Don't have time to read alot? See if you can get Dr. Ron Hood's "Woodsmaster" series of tapes (especially the first 5)which will teach you loads of stuff and you can see it done rather than just imagine it. They are very entertaining as well.
Backpacker magazine is a great publication when it comes to wringing out the newest (and somewhat more expensive) gear available. Not to mention the pictures and recipies are neat too. I just don't rely on it for SERIOUS survival information. For instance I doubt they have ever had an article on cleaning rabbits without a knife, or cooking Marmot stew, or the easiest way to kill a porcupine for dinner. This isn't in their philosophy. Sometimes they do mention catching fish, but never how-to with just line and hook.
Just as an aside, you'll get more GOOD information on these pages toward survival, than you ever will from Backpacker magazine.
Good luck on your quest.
