Hi There,

I'm looking for recommendations on a largish sheath knife for camping/survival knife. I have a whole sale account with a national disti so I'm looking to stay in the realm of factory knives. My current options are teh Gerber LMF (low sixties), any of the Cold steal offerings, and the entreks (I havea small tanto of theirs that I like). I can't get benchmade, so those are out. I'm looking for a big honking knife that I can use to split logs, build a shelter and survive with when I'm out hiking/hunting. I can also get the Rat-7's at a pretty decent price. Any advice or expertise would be much appreciated.

Since you're looking for a "big honking knife", you NEED to get a Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie. That one is a big knife, and it honks very well.:D.

Used Becker should fit the low $ bill , I would save up for a used Ranger , I have a couple of the old Gerber LMF's and they are nice but wont hold up to the heavy use as the Rangers and Becker's, not sure how the new Lmfs are holding up .:)

As production knives go, the Trailmaster is really hard to beat. TOPS Armegeddon or D.A.R.T.are top choices as well. The RAT-7 is also a good knife but its not in the same ballpark as the trailmaster. Hope that helps, Jim

Becker BK-7
Ontario RAT-7

I would never recommend a Gerber or Cold Steel knife.

Cold Steel Bush Ranger---they dont make it anymore --but still find it for below 60 range---big blade and very light weight but durable-

Cold steel- I say get the recon scout or trailmaster bowie.
Gerber- your best off getting the LMF

But I say get a Becker BK-7, Good knife, good price!

Is that a political stance or a quality stance?

I looked at the TOPS armegeddon. That is a huge knife!! Not sure I need a 10 inch blade.

Please keep the info coming. I've learned alot so far.

Cold Steel Bushman.

If you want a solid, sturdy, ready to be abused knife, you just can't beat the bushman. Pair it with a mini bushman and you're set for a good camping trip.

Wish I owned this one.

I'm partial to the RAT-7 in 1095 but don't overlook the Ka-Bar heavy bowie's, I have the short Heavy Bowie and like it very much.
